While there are any number of alternative auction sites, do you realize the risks you take by buying from them ? Even from ebay for that matter ?

I guess I'll never understand people's reasoning for wanting to buy coins from other people they don't know. It's asking to get burned, ripped off - whatever you want to call it - is what it is.

If you want to buy coins, buy them from reputable dealers or reputable sites like Heritage and Telerade and forget about ebay and other auction sites.

I stopped using Ebay for coin purchases several years ago. It's too much like shopping at a garage sale where all you are allowed to see are doctored photographs of the merchandise before paying.

    No thanks.

I see your point and totally agree for coins that are not slabbed. However, I think those slabbed by PCGS, NGC can be safely bought especially from sellers that have sold thousands of coins and have a 100% feedback rating.

edited I was a previous eBay buyer and seller for years so I know how important it is to feel as secure as possible when buying and selling coins on line.

edited - sorry, but you cannot promote your own sites

Two things you have to remember, I am disabled and pretty much homebound so going to shops is out of the question. The other factor is that I only buy cheap stuff that is in original government packaging.
Before anyone says anything I know that modern day proof sets can be tampered with and coins changed. Except for the newest ones, it would be next to impossible to tamper with mint sets. But, if some one wants to go through the effort to switch coins in a $15.00 proof set then they can have at it.
Mainly, the reason I asked was just due to the fact that I get bored and like to look at other sites where there are coins.:eating:

I have had a good experience with Teletrade and I believe that it is an auction site much like EBAY. The one negative and maybe someone else can shed light on this, there seems to be a rather high fee schedule there. I would check it out as well as Heritage because like many others in this group I don't like Ebay unless you can develop a relationship with a good seller that you can depend on as honest.

I say exactly to that one. Still I'd rather go to a coin show.

AHHH, another advertiser. Possibly what you say is true and that web site may be growing. However, isn't that true of the many, many coin web sites? Don't most of them have a buy/sell section? Don't most of them contain members of other forums? So why would this one be different when it comes to purchasing a coin from someone you don't know? On line you talk to someone in a different state or even country that you don't no, never will know, so what is the difference there? Aren't all web sites composed of people you really don't know? How can you get to know someone on a web site? If that is possible, then just look at ebay and you could do the same, get to know someone by reading what they are selling?????

Sorry you feel like that about every website Just Carl. If you want to come and see for yourself well good, if not that's good too. The message wasn't directed only for "Just Carl" but your opinion is also well respected and accepted. Unfortunately not everyone goes or even have coin shows and dealers and so prefer or have only the option of shopping and selling online! So, who ever is interested, come and look for yourself.
Oh and, please don't hurt my feelings by calling me an "advertiser" as I am only giving my opinion just like you kid. :secret:

The thread was titled Ebay Alternatives wouldn't any post mentioning another site be a form of advertising? But obviously you feel offended by it so please accept my appologies on behalf of CoinSpace and any of it's members however the post was just in response to the original thread.

I think Ebay is the worst... sadly they have the lock down on the internet market. Other options are-
    Apmex
    Local coin guy
    craigslist
    coin shows
    others im forgetting

Unfortunately the forum rules prohibit you doing what you did and they do consider you to be an advertiser if you make such posts in the regular sections of of the forum. Now do we allow posting links to your auctions in your signature line.

Others may post to links to any site they like - as long as they do not own that site or are not affilated with that site. In other words, promotion by others is permitted. Self promotion is not.

    Dealer Websites

I was reading through all the "eBay alternatives" posts and realized that maybe all of the reputable coin dealer sites I have bookmarked in IE might be useful. Folks, if you dislike eBay, buy online from dealers you know and trust. You might get better prices, since eBay's high fees force us to mark coins up more than on our own sites. Anyway ... these are some reputable, high-quality companies that I know personally and have dealt with in many cases. I'm sure there are many more, but these are the ones I happen to have bookmarked. Other collectors/dealers should feel free to append other firms to this list.
