Some of you may remember my post a while ago where I stated I was burglarized. To refresh you memories I had a $500 camera and some silver rounds taken from my house. I denied it for a while, thinking the camera would eventually turn up and that I probably put the rounds in a safe location and just forgot where I placed them. Well, sometime in the last month Several items have turned up missing including a Wii, a Playstation 2, an I pod Nano, 2 more cameras and some loose change. I now have a suspect- the neighbor boy that was mowing my lawn and doing other odd jobs for me. I can't prove anything but the police said he has a sheet a mile long. My neighbor also had some coins stolen from her ( a roll of bi-centenial quarters that her mother gave her). He also worked for her. I don't think any of my other coins have been stolen. I have been more careful by getting new, better locks and doorjams that block doors that we do not use. I plan on getting motion detecting lights and also cameras. Just goes to show you, can't trust anybody these days.
Why not set up a surveilance camera and leave out some easy bait? This guy would be toast. It'd be too easy. Then you might get some of your stuff back. That's a lot of stuff to have just 'walking away'.
That sucks, I hope you can find some way to prove it was him that did it. Someone broke into my house a few years ago when I was college. Just knowing that someone was in my house when I wasn't there gave me the worst feeling -- probably worse than actually having my stuff stolen. Maybe you and your neighbor who also had stuff stolen can talk to his parents? I doubt that would help though, considering he already sounds like a lost cause. Anyways, good luck with all of this.
Sorry to hear about this. I'm sure that it's terribly upsetting. Good luck with your "new" security procedures.
I had a break-in in a summer home that I own upstate a couple of years ago. Rotten kids. The neighbor who usually keeps an eye on the place was out of town for a few days on vacation. The little rats put blankets up on all the windows and proceeded to camp out for a few days. Drank all my liquor, ate all the food in the freezer, and stole a little box of some old Irish and British coppers that my old man gave me as a kid. I'm lucky the little unmentionables didn't trash the place. Thankfully, I made the trip up there before any serious damage was done. I feel your pain Sweet Wheatz. The feeling of violation is horrible.....
Some Syrup of Ipecac, about a tablespoon per 16 oz, with some colored water in old liquor bottles is a trick my Fire and Brimstone Grannie used effectively. Makes you remember which bottles were the good ones. Woe to the uncle who puked on her floor! Jim
You're nicer than I am, I prefer KCN, NaCN or strychnine rather than Ipecac. Just remember NOT to include the theft of the liquor in your police report and keep all fingerprints wiped off the bottles.
My uncle's hunting lodge was burglarized repeatedly until he dosed a bottle of cheap booze with ipecac. No trouble for years after....
On a more serious note, they make cameras now that hunters use that you can set up almost anywhere. They have a sensor that once it is tripped, it will automatically send the picture to your cell phone and a computer you chose. They are expensive, but not as much as a full time security system. You know very quickly when it hits your phone, you have a picture to identify the person, and you have time to call the police if it is a break in. Might be worth looking into. I don't keep anything at home anymore, but sometimes the value of an item is not just monitary. Someone can take something very valuable to you and not even know it.
I've gone ahead and removed the posts - remember guys, this is a forum where people of all ages come. Please keep your posting to the topic at hand. Speedy Moderator
Speedy: Come on, they were just kidding around, and I did not see anything that was or could be considered obscene, 'dirty' or off color.
Well Frank - the comments were reported, and I also think that some of the comments were totally uncalled for. If you want, I'll go into detail via. PM on what comments I felt crossed the line. Speedy
Sounds like that kid needs a role model and a different hobby. Bet you know someone who may be albe to help. If that doesn't work, wear a belt. They come in handy from time to time if you know what I mean.
Yep, same here. My house was broken into a long time ago, when I was still single. I'd be gone to work for days at a time. Had a brand new laptop laying on the kitchen counter, a new tv and stereo system and who knows what else just laying around. Yet all they took was about 10 vhs movies I was about to donate to the local St Vincent's and an anciant walkman that didn't even work right. Had to have been kids, and not very bright ones fortunatelly. But, it still creeped me out for a long time after that. Thats when I got a nice security system installed. It's great peace of mind. Guy~
The current Costco magazine advertising what is on costco.com has a Lorex wireless recording solution. For $350 you get two wireless color night vision motion sensor cameras and a 7" monitor delivered.
Sounds like a good idea. If you happen to do this I would make sure it was something with a serial number so that the police will be able to ID it. Also it is very important to test your camera in both light and dark. Also don't forget about sunlight shining threw windows which can really washout the video.
I feel so much that it was the kid who took your stuff. I would definitely have him investigated if that's what your local PD decides..
A deer cam would work good for outside but I wouldn't recommend for in the house. They're very quiet but not silent. If somebody heard it, they could locate it and take it. You could set one or two up outside looking at the front and back of the house if possible. They can be a little bulky so you'd have to find a bush or some branches to hide around one if you strapped it to a tree. Or just hide it in a stable object. The digital ones have come way down in price. The really expensive ones used to be the one with the IR flash. In other words, they could take pics at night with no visible flash. Now those have come way down as well. Maybe $200 for one now. You can get them at Cabela's, ebay, all over the place. I have a couple deer cams myself. One I bought and a digital one I made. I've taken lots of pictures of deer out in the woods with them. Like the newer good, motion detectors, they rely on motion and heat to set them off. So if you do get one, don't mount it where the sun will shine directly on the sensor or it will take random shots.
