Okay, before I start let me save some of the negative responses by saying if I would have looked closely at the terms of the sale, I would not be in this position.
Beings i am disabled and pretty much home bound, Ebay has become almost my sole source of coin collecting. What I usually do is wait until the last 5 days before Soc. Sec. check day and then I bid on stuff. If I win I always pay within 5 days. I have over 100 buys on Ebay with 100% feedback.
On to this story, last week i bid on an item and was very surprised when I won. I was very excited and sent the seller an e-mail that I would be sending payment tomorrow morning via paypal as soon as my check posted, and I thanked him in advance for sending me these beautiful coins, (this would be 4 days from end of auction).
He sent me back a nasty e-mail saying he didn't buy my fixed income story and that he needed payment within 48 hours or he would cancel the transaction and relist it. After checking some history on these coins from prior ebay auctions I could see why he wanted another shot at selling them, as i got them for 25% of what any others had sold for in the last month.
I got a notice from Ebay that he wanted to cancel transaction and asked if I accepted or declined. I declined and explained what I planned to do. I have heard nothing else, so tomorrow morning I am sending payment, and hopefully I get my coins. It just bothers me that people can be so rude when you are typing on a screen and not dealing face to face. thanks for listening.:bigeyes:

That's very unfortunate that it turned out this way, hopefully he understands and tries to be patient, and hopefully you read the auctions more clearly next time!

I think I would have accepted his offer to cancel and taken my business elsewhere. The guy sounds like a jerk who was upset that he didn't get the kind of money he had hoped he would for the coins. If he tries to cancel again, accept it and find a better deal later down the road. Karma will bite him in his backside.

Did he have the "48 hour rule" spelled out in his auction? That's a ridiculous time frame to begin with, five days is closer to the norm. I usually don't even send my buyers a reminder until ten days after the auction ends. This guy is just being a jerk, upset because he didn't get the dollars he wanted. Well, that's his own fault.. he could have set a reserve or higher minimum. I hope you get your coins and I hope you give the seller a neutral feedback, which he justly deserves.

I not defending the sell! If I sell a coin on eBay as Buy now/make an offer my & auction invoice will say*** Payment required within 72hr and If payment can not be completed within that time ***Pleases Contact Me***
But it sound like this seller  has not too many people skills and not too many repeat buyers

I really think you should have cancelled. Not sure how this will turn out but if it was me I'd be to afraid the coins he sends will not be the same ones bid on. Or lost in mail. Or who knows what.
Being a person in an high crime rate area I get suspecious easily too. Not sure how far or near Chicago you are but not a great area to let people know your in that medical situation. You must remember that you are telling a complete stranger that you have a physical problem, sending in your home address and this could make you a mark for a home invasion situation. Since this seller appears to have a mental problem already, I'd be carefull if I were you.

Thanks Carl, you would think that after all the hours I have spent here on CT and all the threads I have read concerning security, that I would have considered that. I am about 90 miles south west of Chicago, but a few years ago when they closed Cabriney Green they paid a lot of those folks to relocate in 2 towns within 15 miles of me. Not big time yet, but crime is definately on the rise out here in our little corner of the corn field!!!

I sell buy/sell coins on Ebay and it is fustrating trying to determine who is thruthful and who is not. I expect payment within 36 hrs unless a a buyer emails me. In your case you did the right thing by emailing him and I also would take my money somewhere else. There are alot of great coin deals on Ebay!!!

There are some really good sellers on ebay, and then there are those who are full blown nutcases!! Sometimes buying on ebay is a shopping russian roulette. :D

First off...congrats on a nice eBay win!

With very few exceptions, if you either pay or contact the Seller within 24 hours you won't run afoul of most Seller's rules. However, it's a good idea to read the terms of sale prior to bidding.

I sometimes find that I either can't (or don't want to) pay immediately. Sometimes I'm on travel and buy more that what's in my account...requiring a deposit to my PayPal account. Other times, I just want to bid on more of the Seller's auctions for combined S&H. In either case, I contact the Seller as soon as possible to ask permission (it's their auction and they set the rules...not you).

If I feel I need a little more time to pay, I'll opt to pay via personal check (if offered). That saves the Seller $$ and buys me a little more time (we all know how slow the mail can be :D). Conversely, it may be a few weeks before you receive your coins as the Seller will wait for the check to clear.

In any case, (if I haven't already said this) contact the Seller within 24 hours to let them know what's going on...it's only courteous (you reap what you sow).

Ugh, sounds like a total jerk.

I would almost never question someone's fixed income reasoning, having being broke myself I completely understand when someone lives from check to check.

Plus, just 4 days to wait? When ebay allowed money orders one rarely got any transaction completed before 2-3 weeks past the sale.

    Unreasonable seller.

I'm an eBay buyer; not a seller, but I hear stories of deadbeat buyers all the time...honestly, how is a seller to know? Biggiej admits he waited four (4) days before contacting the Seller...not proper eBay etiquette.

I would have opted to pay via personal check (if that were an option) or contacted the Seller and explained it would be five days before funds would be available via PayPal...leaving the "fixed income" part out of the discussion.

You would be surprised how much unpleasantness can be avoided through timely, courteous discussion. Sellers should be afforded the same courtesies buyers demand of them.

How unfortunate I hope it works out in the end for you and he follows through with the sale.

He waited three days and told him the check would be going out on day four. It used to be in the eBay "rules" that the buyer and seller should contact each other within three days so he was within the limits of proper eBay etiquette.

I'm sorry to hear it. Hope everything turns out alright. Be sure to get insurance on the shipment, though.

Perhaps "eBay Etiquette" isn't the best choice of words...I'm just saying that...in my experience (over 2000 eBay purchases)...if I treat sellers with respect, I get treated with respect in return. If a buyer makes contact within 24 hours of a sale, in most cases, problems like this can be avoided.

The topic of this thread is Unfriendly Ebay!!! and I'm saying that eBay can be as friendly or unfriendly as you want to make it.

no he sent me a message the next day telling me that I had to pay in 48 hours. I contacted him back in less than 24 hrs. and said I planned to pay within 4 days. I did not wait, I contacted him within 24 hours!!!

I have been using ebay since the end of 1999. I have sold a few items and purchased quite a few. I have never been cheated or mistreated by either a buyer or a seller. Perhaps I'm just lucky but the folks I've dealt with have all been very nice and have executed the buy/sell contracts inline with what has been posted as part of the sale. I really like it.

I'm sorry, I read your original message to say that you contacted him four (4) days after the auction. If you contacted him the next day he should have been courteous and tried to work with you.

Does he accept personal checks? Just tell him that the check is in the mail and get it in the mail as soon as you can...or accept his cancellation if you really don't want to do business with him.

    Hi biggiej-
A work-around that may work for you next time, if you find yourself winning an auction before your SS check comes, is to have a credit card linked to your paypal account and just pay for the auction with it. You could then pay off the card before it accrues finance charges.
