Hi, I paid $260.00 for this 1884 S Mrgan. on an internet auction. Even looks proof like to me. Seller says full breast feathers and is uncirculate. Can you guys let me know what you think value could be with this rare Morgan ? Thanks...
Are the colors correct in the pictures? Coins appear to be green on the edges. I don't think I ever saw silver turn green.
I'd say xf at best based on those pics. Looks like at some point someone also tried to clean that green crud off. Guy~
I think PVC damage will turn coins Green. And when you buy off of e*** you stand a good chance of buffed, whizzed, altered surfaces, and bad descriptions of the coins. A lot of the coins sold as BU are usually sliders, and will come in at a 58 to 55. Right now there is a guy selling FS nickels that are not. Proof coin on a Morgan would have a MIRROR background with frosted letters and images. A clue here. If you see a Morgan with frost around the letters and stars, and shiny fields, face, eagle, letters and stars, then it has been buffed! Go to a show and look at some graded coins it will give you an idea as what to look for. I have morgans in several grades. 61 62 65 some of the coins that were reported to be 65 would probably go for a 62-61 even 60! The more the face is dinged the lower it goes. The 65 that I have has some light rub marks on the high spots, and has very few dings.
Uncirculated has become a loose, overly used, generic term that is meaningless most of the time. To me, uncirculated would imply that it never circulated, therefore, it could also be called 'mint state'. Which the seller was unwilling to call it because it's obviously not MS. So what is it? Would really need larger pics to give any kind of relatively accurate grade. NGC price guide lists an EF-40 at $52.90 and an AU-50 at $258.00. And they're usually high. From what I can tell, it looks closer to an EF than an AU to me. You would have been better served buying an NGC slabbed one. Not to mention the number of Chinese counterfeits that have been floating around for years. I'd be sure to weigh and measure it. If you want an honest opinion, I would have passed on it. While they are scarcer than the average Morgan, you could have gotten a much nicer slabbed example for $260, IMHO.
Here's a slabbed AU-55 with luster nice luster remaining that went for 310.00 free shipping: http://cgi.ebay.com/1884-S-NGC-AU55-MORGAN-SILVER-1_W0QQitemZ140354285807QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCoins_US_Individual?hash=item20adc470ef Here's a PCGS slabbed AU-50 with some luster remaining for $250.00 free shipping that went unsold. http://cgi.ebay.com/LIGHTLY-RUBBED-1884-S-MORGAN-SILVER-DOLLAR-PCGS-AU50_W0QQitemZ130339650242QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCoins_US_Individual?hash=item1e58d93ac2 And a nice ANACs AU-53 with lots of luster for $229 unsold. http://cgi.ebay.com/1884-S-MORGAN-DOLLAR-ANACS-AU53-NICE_W0QQitemZ270473798455QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCoins_US_Individual?hash=item3ef97ea337 There's a good chance this one you got would not slab because of cleaning or AT'ing. It may be real or it may not be. It's a 50/50 chance. That guy's selling a lot of loose, toned Peace dollars and Peace dollars are rarely found with colorful toning...... but it sure drives up the prices.
