Hi, I won this 1884 S Morgan on auction. Seller states it is MS and has full breast featers when I asked. Even looks proof like to me. Any Morgan people here can give me a rough estimate of grade? I paid $260.00 for the coin.

    Thanks...

It does not look MS to me. If I had to say, it look more like XF to me...maybe low AU.

I tend to agree with the other guys - XF details, surface "issues", net VF.

This one is certainly not mint state, and no one would expect MS for that kind of money. Recent auction records suggest $260 gets a certified AU50-53 ... somewhere in there. MS 1884-S Morgans are very pricey.

I think AU-55 myself, and I can't tell if it has good tone or not from the photos as it has a green tinge on my monitor.

Well the seller has a 100% feed back and gives 7 day return policy. Told me pictures just don't show feather details...Seller actually tried to use cancel transaction option...

The coin looks to have light wear on each side, so my guess would be in the AU53 range. And the color doesn't look original, possibly from re-toning after a cleaning or artificial toning. You didn't get a bargain, if that's what you were thinking. If you thought the coin was uncirculated and original, you will probably get yourself in trouble buying uncertified cons on Ebay or elsewhere.

I agree with the others... I would call it AU details and from the pictures the surfaces definitely need a better look... not really much to go on with those pictures tho... so tentatively AU details cleaned and retoning... but definitely not MS.

RH287, don't dispair, I have a couple of 1884S in the bank that came back AU58. There are many sliders AU/MS for this date, and 90% plus of them are AU, IMO.

There is a good reason why the 1884S is so much higher in MS than as an AU.

What Mark says above is true even though it is probably not what you wanted to hear. The wear is especially visible where the hair lines cover the top of the ear. To see this and know where to look you should purchase and study a book on grading coins. And then look at pictures of a perfectly struck coin to make comparisons. Don't get me wrong, you have a nice coin there. Just the price could be a little better.

Another thing to look at. The coin trends in AU at $500 and in MS65 at $2500. With this coin apparently what makes it rare is how many have made it through to today in strictly uncirculated condition. Otherwise it appears to be a relatively common coin by judging price guides. Another thing to know about price guides or published trends is that they are often somewhat optimistic. Most dealers try to sell for less than trends. Another thing to which Mark did not mention is that just because a coin is certified by an independent grading authority does not make it generally accepted at that grade. Different slabbers will grade the coin differently and to different standards.

The lesson to learn: Once burned...Lesson learned! Study grading coins for your self and check out the standards of the different grading services. Keep on learning every day!

Good idea , wait for a problem free coin , and I'd go certified because of the huge price differences betwwn grades , but still check different coins in the grade you decide all AU-53s are not equal .

Pictures don't show feather details because there aren't any...
I think EF is a stretch...I'd go with highest grade of VF. Obverse better than reverse..
