Yeah I jumping right back into the morgan date set the 83 and these 2 plus the 1890 already in hand make 4 in as many days lol so here you go 2 more, I haven't tried to research the VAMs for either yet so feel free 1881s and 1887 and I made sure no numbers showing this time for "easy" checking lol
The angles make it challenging (and can sometimes cover a few hits) ...if it's as clean as depicted, the first one looks MS 67 but I will hedge and call it an MS 66. ....the second looked off on first glance (altered surfaces) but I think it is just the photo...I will guess MS 63 PL
81s is 65 PL. Any other date is at least a 66, but 1881s is the most conservatively graded Morgan. 87 is a 63.
Ok here we go... Might be a lil surprise in this reveal 1881s as Morgandude said... very conservatily graded.. though not in hand the pics really seem good enough to call it MS65 PL but no.. MS64, but got a very good price on it And here is the big surprise, I also think slightly undergraded I'd say 62-63 but NGC say MS61 PL... and again the price was right My one question to morgandude is this... why is this one PL and not the 81, I thought the reflectivness of the fields determined pl/dpl... Or is the 81 just as you said over conservative? (PS good call ddddd)
to be honest, "clean" or lack of dings/flaws in patina was one of the major factors I was looking for... I trying to build an MS set and I want top eye appeal above a slightly higher grade...
My guess was MS65 and AU58. Lighting on the first picture makes it really hard to see any chips/scuffs that could lower the grade. I think MS61PL is fair for the second one.
The mirrors might be just enough deeper on the 1887 to call it PL. From your photo, it looked more PL than the 1881-S. Both are common dates in the Morgan series, so while the 81-S is often graded conservatively, the 87 is too. As far as the grades, something still looks slightly off about the 1887, so the 61 might be a "net" grade. It's not baggy enough to be a 61 but there might be some other issue that lowered the grade 1-2 points instead of the graders giving it a "details" designation. The 81-S looks better than 64. I've seen a small handful of these 64s over the years that look much better. Sometimes they will regrade higher but it is often still not worth it (spending ~$25 in order to get a $30-$50 bump isn't the best risk given decent odds it still comes back in the same grade). Prudent collectors (like you) will seek these out and they make for a great purchase if you pay below 65 money for a coin every bit as good.
