Does “encapsulation” status at PCGS mean my NGC coin actually crossed?

Logically, it seems it should. There would be nothing to encapsulate if it didn’t cross. But maybe it’s just another rung on the status ladder between “grading” and “quality check”, and I shouldn’t get excited until I get the “grades are ready” email. Been a long time since I sent in a coin for crossover, and don’t think I followed progress online back then.

It's a 1908 10-franc French coin. I’ll try to remember to post pics if it crosses.

Unfortunately, I believe 'encapsulation' is just part of their workflow and does not guarantee that your coin successfully crossed. You'll have to wait for 'grades ready' -- fingers crossed for ya!

Generally yes it would. I don't know if it still does with the backlog and delays of the last year it could be an extra step to give them more time to ship but in the past if it didn't cross it would basically just skip from grading to shipped. Being imaged generally means it crossed too

Good question. The word does sort of seem to imply that, doesn't it? But I note @Dima's reply above, and realize that what was said there may in fact be the case.

Good luck! Guess you'll know fairly soon.

My most recent submission was my first attempt at a true crossover, with the coin submitted in an NGC holder. (Usually I crack and submit 'em raw to the new service, taking my chances.)

Unfortunately this one failed to cross. :(

Here's one of my orders from December. Note that my mouse is hovering over 'Encapsulation' state of their workflow. My order passed the 'Encapsulation' state, but that (unfortunately) didn't mean all my coins successfully crossed :(

If there are multiple coins in the submission it could be in encapsulation with other coins that are being slabbed while it itself is not being slabbed since I would think they would keep all the coins of a submission together.

There is also an option on the submission form asking if you want coins that don’t grade to be holdered (encapsulated) or to not. So it is possible for a problem coin, receiving no grade, to go through the Encapsulated step. As for coins attempting a crossover and none being successful, this is a good question.

Searching on the PCGS website I found the long version of “Encapsulation”. It’s “Encapsulation: Grade finalization and encapsulation.” So, my NGC crossover coin may or may not have crossed. Hopin’ fer da best tho.

None of those things happen unless at least something crossed. Like I said before it would be a change for a dnc to sit in that stage.
