First off I want to say it was GREAT to meet forum member KLJ--the kind of collector I like to be around!... The show was great!!!!!!...about 40 tables...and some great coins I had never seen before...some PF WL Halves...3 1955/55 Cents all owned by the same guy...they were low MS grades...and UNC Bust half dollars...some Bust Dollars from the 1800's too....its nice to see coins that more than likely I won't ever be able to buy....but I didn't say never...I said more than likely!!! I completed my Cent collection (Date and Mint Mark from 1909-date)!!!--I might get my 1931-S slabbed so I can make sure it doesn't get any marks on it!! And also got a good deal on 2 other items...a VF/XF 1908-S IHC...got it below Gray Sheet Bid price...and a nice 1955 Proof Set below gray sheet bid...little bit of toning on the half but the dime is CAMEO....and nice and white. I almost got a NGC 1953-S MS65 Franklin half dollar that was marked $45--great price but when it was slabbed a nice piece of hair had gotten sealed inside.. I don't think it was doing anything good to the coin :--O It was a great time and even though I only stayed 1 hour or a little more I went for what I needed and I came home with more! And to top the day off...I got home and got a note from Q. D. Bowers!!! Speedy
Good stuff, Speedy. I got a PF68 1963 Franklin from my uncle, and it was absolutely gorgeous! I also really want a lot of the stuff you've mentioned above, least of all to finish up my own Lincoln Cent collection. I'm only missing 36 more! (Too bad that includes the 1909 SVDB, 1909S, and 1931S! I got a 14-D in circulation though the other day, so it's all good. And before you ask, yes, it's NOT a counterfeit. ~AJ
YOU GOT A 1914-D in circulation??????????? Mine is a PCGS G-4--Paid $110 for it a few years ago...I'm thinking about upgrading but am not sure... I saw a PF68 Franklin today but it had a nice big "milk" spot right on the head...so that lower the grade alot! It was a great show...keep up the good work on the Wheat cents...it took me 5 years! The show was in Jeffersonvile IN! Speedy
It's easily the best show in the area. Although this year wasn't the best its ever been. Very little currency for sale, and that's what I really wanted. The local Hooters was short staffed today, so they couldn't send over waitresses like they usually do. Although I did find out my coin dealer is going to be a grandfather. The son of his that I helped marry (and whose wife has the same birthday as me) is expecting. I did get to hold a $10,000 FRN. Not that I bought it. If I had $70,000 burning a hole in my pocket, I wouldn't spend it on one note. And it was real nice to meet Spiffy. It's always fires me up to meet young collectors.
Yep---the $10,000 was neat...I didn't hold it but looked at it for a good long while.. I was going to see if I could get my hands on the 1955/55 Cent but he was busy and so I didn't Speedy
Yeah, I did... it's F12 too.... not sure how that happened, but it works for me! I got three different dealers to authenticate it, and got slips of authentication from each of them. I might send it in to PCGS for slabbing, but then again, I might not.... it's nicer having it next to all the rest in my Dansco! ~AJ
If I were you I would do some cheaking around the Police and see if a collection had been stolen...it would be hard for the owner to prove it was his but if he had photos he could prove it...and I can't think of any other reason a 14-D would be in circulation... Speedy
Some more things I saw at the show... I also saw 1901-S Quarter...and a Proof Buff Nickel...and no it wasn't the 2005 Buff...it was an "old" Buff nickel...PF V Nickels...and one of the PF WL Halves was NGC PF66!...I think the Buff was PF66/67...MS Large Cents...MS V Nickels...RED IHC....Proof Morgan Dollars...I also saw 1922 Plain cents...1972/72 DD cent....1909-S VDB...1909-S IHC...1914-D....1877 Also saw a shield Nickel that was CAMEO...and I mean CAMEO...NICE...saw some errors and some coins from the BC's and AD's...a whole table of them...neat but not my pick...a lot of world coins and some gold...not any platinum that I saw... I know most of you guys see this type of thing more than I do....but I find it neat to be able to see coins like that and get to look at them and learn about them...always neat and fun! Speedy
Going to coin shows with open eyes - and open ears - is perhaps one of the most educational experiences a collector can have. Even if you don't buy anything - attend every coin show you can. While there, look at every coin you can - study them, look at the grades assigned for slabbed & raw and make your own judgement as to accuracy. Ask questions of the delaers and other collectors, strike up conversations on any given subject. Soak up information like a sponge and do your best to retain it - take notes even. But above all - enjoy yourself. Knowledge gained while having fun is surprisingly easy to retain.
Amen...you can say that again GDJMSP Some of the rarer coins I didn't get to hold but just to be able to look at them less than 6inches away was neat and educational! Speedy
Sounds as if you had a great time there speedy. I always enjoy going to shows and getting to look at coins I wouldn't normaly get to see.
"I completed my Cent collection (Date and Mint Mark from 1909-date)!!!", Speedy. Congrads on a completion. Perhaps one day when you are older you can use your completed collections to decorate your home office for it seems that you are focused enough to be successful with whatever fancys your interest.
Were do you live? I live on cape cod and I don't have a liscence (I'm 11) and theres none in the county
Thanks...I might upgrade some and might add a 1922 Plain someday but right now I'm going to leave it and go on to something else...maybe Quarters since I'm only missing 3. Who knows...maybe someday I'll have to sell my set to buy my home...not decorate it !!! Morgan Dollar I don't have my liscence yet either...but it helps to have a dad that collects too...he likes the show almost as much as I do... Speedy
