If you "help" him spend his money, you are probably setting yourself up to be blamed if things don't go well for him. And if they do go well, you might not receive the credit. It's likely a no win situation for you. Run!;)

I agree, I'm a coin collector and also a junk collector (just ask the mrs.). I know what coins I have but not idea what junk I have.

I think it's great that "rockdude" replied to a thread about a "rockhead"

Abe - I think a nice gesture would be to give him an ANA Grading Standards book to go along with his Red Book. That way, when he buys something new you can challenge him to give you a grade, separate from the seller, based on what he sees in the book.

That way, he finds out for himself (to some degree) that what he is buying doesn't match the guide and he does some learning on his own.

Once you've done that and he never cracks the book, then smile and indulge him. You've done all you can!

That's a strange comment. What does it mean?

Merely that a poster named "rockdude", replied to a thread in which the person who started it referred to his friend as a "rockhead". I would have said the same if someone started a thread about a coin that was a "dog" and subsequently, a poster with the name "dog" in his user name, had replied.

Oh, OK, I thought maybe you were the other guy who seems to gather pleasure from causing problems.

I don't know who you're speaking of, but I promise, I wasn't trying to cause problems.

    Pretty good idea! :thumb:

Numismatic knowledge takes a lifetime to accumulate. Walter Breen likely didn't learn everything there is to know about coins before he died. To collect coins without a perfect knowledge of them isn't a sin.

However, to truely call oneself a "coin collector" (imho), there should be some appreciation/reverence given to the relationship of coinage to history and human struggle.

To buy a TPG coin to flip in a year for a 20% profit isn't really what I would call "coin collecting".

I agree, but there was nothing written about the original poster's friend to indicate that was what he was doing.

A cc is someone who loves to collect coins. Bottom line.
Some have extensive knowledge on coin collecting, some don't.
It's also not for everyone.. I see it as an "aquired" taste.

He's buying coins just so he can call himself a coin collector. If you ask him what he bought last week he couldn't tell ya. I think he knows that the D on some coins, comes from the Denver mint. Thats it, nothing else. I think he's just pretty much showboating, trying to impress people that he has expensive coins. To me thats not coin collecting.
