I had to get one of these so a few months back I was at my fav coin store and I wasn't there to pick this up but you know how it is. Anyways, I looked in the glass cabinet and those were way too high priced so I asked if they had some that were more circulated. He pulled out a box and there was a few in the $80 to $120 range and this is what I picked out. I'm actually showing off right now but I know at least one of you know that! :mouth: Anyways, here's my CC babe!! I love this coin, I just love it and every time I open my binder, I have to sneak a peek. Sure she's a little worn out but I think I got a fair price on it. When I picked it out, I didn't even know that 1878 was the first year. It was just the one I liked!! If you can post a pic!!
I love the look of that coin too. In fact, I'm a lover of all lower grade coins, but especially Morgan's and Barber's. What's your opinion on the grade?
It is a nice, evenly circulated piece, and I think you have a wonderful coin. I have always had a certain fondness for that particular mint - if you ever travel to Carson City, you should see the Nevada State Museum, which is housed in the mint. When I was there several years ago they had a wonderful exhibit of Carson City coins, including the gold.
Oh excuse the bottom pic, but I'm sure y'all can read between the views. As far as the grade goes I have no idea at all, never much thought about it on this old gal. Anyone got an opinion on the grade? thx
So why don't they bring back that CC place. We now have the W mint mark, so why not the return of the CC?
As Scottishmoney says, the Carson City mint is a very cool place to visit. Surprisingly small, it neo-classical architecture stands out against the backscape of the High Sierra, and you really feel like you're stepping into a bit of American history the moment you step inside. As far as reviving the CC mintmark goes, I'm willing to bet that there is a legal requirement to have mintmarks accurately reflect the geographical area in which the coin is made. The old CC mint is way too small to house a more modern facility, and considering that it was built in part to accommodate the large amounts of silver and gold that were still being mined at the time but not any more, it's unlikely that the Treasury would construct another mint in the vicinity.
Nice CC. Nothing wrong with a circulated piece. I bet that thing saw a lot of action in the saloons and brothels of nearby Virginia City, so it actually has some real history behind it. Guy~
Nice "CC" Fretboard! I have to agree, "CC" has got something about it. I own only 2 Morgans, both low grade CC's.
I like your coin and would probably grade it as a fine from the pics that you posted. I like CC also.
Nice CC Fretboard! I don't know what it is about those two little Cs', lol, but they're my favorite. Here's my favorite CC:
