Contest #52 open to all posters

    CONTEST IS CLOSED

Since I won the last contest :p, I feel obligated to hold another one and offer up my own prize.

    The contest rules are simple::confused:

-To be elegible you must have posted somewhere ,other than here, within the last week or during the next three days.

-To enter simply reply to this thread by stating which specific US coin denomination intrests you the most. As I said entry is only open until midnight the 17th CDT. BTW my favorite is Kennedy's.

-The two winners will be determined through a random drawing and only one entry will be considered per person.:(

-The prizes will be purchased tomorrow from my local coin dealer and both will be proof coins which are stricking in appearance. They will not be U.S. coins however since I don't think I could bring myself to give one away. I will try to post pictures of the coins before the close of the contest.

-The winners will be announced in a seperate thread, sometime Sunday:)

P.S. I do ask that the two winners each hold a contest of their own within one and a half months of the close of this one. They may use any rules they want but I prefer contests such as Morgan wins. Or mabey Morgan wins again?;)

Thank You all for your participation, and your assistance in answering my previous posts and or questions. :)

BTW I'm still selling 1930's silver nickels at $.10/each:eek:

What coin denom interests me most? Why, cents, of course! I love the Flying Eagle design, along with the Indian Cents, and who doesn't love a good Lincoln Wheatie?!

The 50 state quarters. I'd probably be interested in others but i just haven't encountered any other than from publications and in forums like this. Older US coins don't get into Canadian circulation that easily, especially the large dollar.

I agree with ajm229 that the flying eagle cent is about the best coin out there when in higher grades. Next would be Drapped Bust Half and large cents.

Yeah - but my focus is only on 1900-2000 coins at the moment, except for small cents.... I have expanded my focus back to 1856! So, unfortuately I don't know a lot about larger cents. :(

I wanna find the 1854 and 55 Flying Eagle "Medium Cent" pattern coins.... they look pretty cool!

Franklins Halfs---and Wheat Cents since I'm just 3 away from completing that set!!!

    AJ--
Did you know that the 1856 FE cent is a pattern and wasn't ment to be thought of as a circulating coin...so if you want a set of circulated cents...don't count the 1856--that will help your $$$!!...the mint sent some to the banks and such to see how people would like them...they did and kept them!!!
(Thanks to Q D Bowers for that note...I'm reading a book of his and he was talking about the 1856 FE.)

Hummmm..I would have to say Gold coins in general..there are a wonderful assortment of AGE, Lib's, Indians and Commem's. But for me I concentrate on the series of AGE Prf and Uncirc.
    Gold! Gold! Gold!.. :D :D

Right now my interest is spread between $5 Gold AGEs and Pace Dollars.
But I will always have soft spot for ALL US Halves, especially those Walkers.

If I can persuade the Gods of random selection in any way.... Morgan....my contest prize will be a proof Kennedy

My favorite denomination has always been the two cent piece, although I have been taking an interest in modern $5 gold proofs, including both AGEs and commems. :D I don't know if I'll be collecting them, though, but we'll see.

One of my favorite coin denominations is the Kennedy half. I'm not a series collector, but the reverse of the eagle is very striking to me. I like the early ones in cam/dcam contrasting with the mirrored fields. The coins are special to me because:

    1) They have survived in collectible numbers.
    2) Those earlier proofs weren't designed to be cameos like the more modern coins
so they have some relative rarity and uniqueness.
    3) I consider their prices to be very reasonable.
    4) They have precious metal content, (I am a 'silvrluvr').
    5) They are good sized coins and the detail can be seen without really having
to use any magnification, (my eyes aren't so good).
    6) They have some 'heft' and feel substantial in my hand.
    7) Oh, and did I say the design was appealing to my eyes?

I like others too, but something just seems special about these coins to me. Maybe it's because I grew up during the sixties when people still spent them somewhat regularly and I had an early exposure to them. The Kennedy side is okay too, kind of like an everlasting memorial....(I don't discuss money, religion or politics).

    The prize the prize

    What can I say....? Hummmm?

    I AGREE!:D

BTW I purchased the prizes today. They are both Austrialian 1/2 ounce silver bullion coins. One has a Rooster on the reverse and the other has a Snake.
In my opinion that are among the most beautiful coins I have ever purchased.
They are deep camoes and beautifuly frosted:D . I'd keep them for myself  but I already posted this darn contest so I guess I'll keep my word. As I said I will get pic's up as soon as possible.:)

Sorry Jimmy but I'm still working on a couple proof sets of teh Kennedies. I'm pretty sure it will take an act of congress before I part with one.

There is always next time though.

Glad that someone is holding another contest, I think it's a fun idea. Anyway ... Lincoln pennies are my favorite to collect, but I love the new nickels! I have yet to get and ocean in view, and my favorite one is a tossup between the buffalo and the keelboat.

Maybe I should put this last part on another paret of the forum, but has anyone noticed the wear pattern on the obverse of the new nickels? The large flat surface of Jefferson's forehead looks like one of the first things to get "hit" with dirt.

Nickels have always been my coin of choice for some reason.

Yeah, Speedy, I knew that the 1856 is a pattern cent, and thus never issued for circulation, but I love the design so much, that I want a complete set of pattern and non-pattern flying eagles, including the 1854 and 1855 "medium cent" flying eagle patterns!

I'm with you. I love the cents arena - let alone the starting price if you can find a keeper :D The flying eagle cent is my bid. i have an 1857, but it is slabbed 'environmentaly damaged' - i keep my eyes peeled for an affordable 1856
