It really isn't a mystery, cause it is obviously a Young Queen Victoria Large cent from 1840. But on the reverse it has 'EAST INDIA COMPANY' around the top. 1845 at the bottom, but it has "ONE CENT" centered inside a wreath. I expected 1 Anna, or something like that. It weighs 9.2 grams and is 29mm across. I can't find this coin in my books either. The pictrue is not very clear because the coin is pretty dark, but I'd gress it to be an XF. The last mystery coin from India is too dark and in very poor condiction to photograph. The obverse has C BROOKE on the left edge, RAJAH on the right. A mans face in left profile between them. All I can read on the reverse is the date 1880 at the bottom, and ONE CENT in the center. It weighs 8.7 grams and is 29 mm in diameter. I know the answers are here at this Forum, cause I've never seen the group stumped. I apprecite the help. JonySky

Awwwwwwwwwww, c'mon Jony - It really isn't fair to ask for an opinion without a picture.

BTW, I can't find a "cent" denomination for any British India coin, East India Company or otherwise.

The size is also off for a British India coin of that date. The silver Rupees come in 31.1, 31.3 and 31.5mm diameters, but they weigh 11.666g. Half Rupees are only 5.83g and 24.5-24.6mm wide.

your other coin is from Sarawak, located on the northern coast of the island of Borneo, along with Brunei and Sabah (North Borneo)

    1880 1 cent, mintage 1.070 million, F=$3.00, VF=$7.00, XF=$22.00, UNC=$62.50

Charles J Brooke was Rajah from 1868-1917, having succeeded his father, James Brooke (1941-1868). Charles J Brooke was succeeded by his son, Charles V Brooke, who ruled from 1917-1946. In 1946, after the Japanese occupation during WWII decimated the economy of the island, CV Brooke ceded the island to the British, and it became part of Malaya & British Borneo, which later became independent as Malaysia.

Try under Straits Settlements (Malasia) KM3 ;)

One of my favourites in that I have an 1845ww in about EF condition that I bought from a dealers junk tray (along with some EF British North Borneo 1 cent pieces) for the grand total of 50p. ...Yes, I can be a smug little (insert expletive here) at times :).

The Straits Settlement 1 cent carries a value from circa $5 in VG to circa $100 in unciculated condition....but my catalogue is not `current'.

Thanks Ian for coming through in another clutch. ;)

This whole thread is further proof of my mantra - post pictures or very complete and detailed descriptions of all legends, design elements and size/weight/composition, or generalists won't be able to help, and the true expert who can work from a partial description may or may not wander in.
