the back is a little different. The lines on the lower left hand side are straight up and down not at a 45 degree angle and the upper right hand side of the coin are more lines that are up and down but most coins have the 3 circles across the center and the one that I have has 3 sets of 3. That is the major difference that I have found on this coin compared to all the images that I have found online. I have to assume that there is not a huge value in the coin because of the differences unless it was used by Blackbeard or someone like that haha

There are quite a few different types and the designs can differ. It could also be that the coin you have is a fake. Fakes of these coins probably outnumber the genuine examples.

To help you we need to see pictures of your coin.

What is the price difference between a real Escudo and a counterfit coin? I know that is a very open question but lets say that 24k gold is $1000 per oz what is the history worth another $1500? If it is a fake it would be gold melt without question

Sent you my email in a PM. As to the price difference, not all fakes are made of gold, or the same fineness of gold. So the price difference could be huge. The coin could be worth nothing.

Here are the pictures of your coin. Have not attributed it yet, but will work on that. Meanwhile others can take a crack at it.

But since it has been set in jewelry, even if it is real, most if not all of the numismatic value is gone.

Yes, contact Dan Sedwick - http://www.sedwickcoins.com

He is considered to be the leading authority on these coins. You will have to send it to him so he can see it first though.

I want to thank you all for your help. I have advised my client that the coin/pendant does not have the value that he expected and that it would be a beautiful item to pass down threw his family. Again thank you for all you help.

Looks neat to me. Why should encircling a coin in a gold ring be any worse than slabbing it? I can understand that boring a hole or sautering something onto it would devalue, but this setting looks pretty protective of the coin.

Another question: is there a good rough-and-ready test for the gold content of a coin that can be done without chipping off a piece for chemical analysis?
Maybe like measuring the volume and weight VERY carefully?
