The key is having a macro setting on your camera.

That allows true in-focus closeup photography.

So far as mega pixels go, any modern camera has more than adequate resolution if a macro setting is used.

    Agreed.
A macro mode is key, or if you plan on spending big dollars you could get a DSLR, and get a macro lens with it.

You may want to just go to a camera store or the camera section of stores like Walmart and look at what is available.
Almost any modern camera should have at least a 5 megapixel quality and that is already more than adequate. What you should look for as already noted is the Macro ability. This is the ability to get close. And no, don't bother with an SLR. Way to expensive and in most instances to heavy and then too you have to start looking for lenses. If your not into cameras, that would be a waste of money and you'ld not be happy with one.
What you want is simply a decent camera, light weight, Macro settings, screw mounting on the bottom for a tripod. Built in flash for other than coin pitures.
A decent thing called a hot shoe on the top for addtional flash units is nice for photos in darker areas but of no use on coins.
If you go to a decent camera store and ask, ask, ask, you should be able to come up with a decent camera for a decent price. Today's prices on such cameras are starting about $50 and up. For about $100 you can usually get a pretty great camera.

I believe Goodman in his book recommended a minimum of 4 Mpixels and macro capability.
That gives you a LOT of wiggle room.
Plenty of good cameras, particularly second-hand, that will easily meet that criteria at a low (<$300) price.
Keep your wallet open for a camera stand (IMO better than a tripod) and a pair of "white" lights.
And it would be VERY helpful to have a remote shutter release.
