I do know they r producing a proof/Bu set for about Septmember release! I might wait. I hate 2 loose the "pre-order" discount on the BU $
Thanks again foer all the post's on this thread..Dimedude..I as well just picked up the Smithsonian Unic Dollar Commem (Modern) it is indeed a beautiful coin..cant wait to add the proof version and the gold coin version as well..but it is very expensive in high grade..MS 69-or 70. Update 1937D Texas Commem was returned due to some spotting on the obverse that was not visible on the original photo..was credited as soon as it was received by TeleTrade Auctions.. no questions asked!! Great service for those interested. Hope to replace it soon with a better example. RickieB

This thread has quietened down a little but I wanted to add something to it. Perhaps someome can tell me about the Smithsonian Commem $5 Proof Gold Coin....the mintage is just under 9000 and the Uncirc is just under 22,000 Why is the uncirc have a greater value than the proof? Seems that it should be the other way around... Stumped and wanting to find out!! RickieB
Latest Commem Addition to Collection Here is my latest adddition to my commem collection..a $5 Smithsonian Proof RickieB
It's an anomaly - one of those things that shouldn't be. As a general rule, with these commems it is the Unc that has the lower mintage. People are so used to that being the case that the Unc almost always brings higher prices. Same thing happened with this coin. Folks are just so used it being that way - that they bid more for the Unc when they should not be.
I'll tell you what- you guys have some awful nice coins. As for me I like he Cali, the one with the bear and the 49er (unfortunately I do not have one)
Love the Smithsonian. What does the sun symbol on the reverse represent (besides the sun) ? Is that symbolic of a Smithsonian logo ?
http://www.smithsonianmag.com/smithsonian/issues98/aug98/heyman_aug98.html here ya go Bacchus.. pretty interesting huh? RickieB
My favorite comem is my 1916 Mcinlley dollar. I have other old comems, and I enjoy the history the coins represent. If I ever get the equipment to take decent coin photos I'll post some pics.
At the moment my home pc is dead, and I haven't had much luck with my digital camera but I will keep trying when we get a new pc. Here is one pic I took recently.
Viper..Now that is creative.. a mag-glass ..way to go!! Nice coin as well. Bythe way..what is that coin? Cant find it in the red book? Let me know... Edited response: Viper.. I found it.. it is a "Gold" commem..very nice!! RickieB
If you hold the glass right up to the leans it won't show in the photo and also will make a better photo ;--) NICE COIN!!! Speedy
A year ago commemoratives were on my list of coins I had zero interest in. Now I see that I have somehow acquired five of them. The one I just bought is a 2000 Leif Erickson. I saw one in a magazine and I instantly had to have it.
Hey Bacchus, there is an Icelandic version of that coin as well that makes the set...very cool indeed. It is on my list as well. I will post a link when I find it again. Nice going! RickieB
