I've received my first LN6 set and found it to be a very nice presentation.

I love the look of the Proof cents, especially finding the look of the mirror-like fields very dynamic next to the matte-looking devices. For this reason I am very pleased that I stocked up on the 2009 4 pc. Lincoln Proof sets back in August, which are to be delivered in November. I'm still not a fan of the design of the Lincoln silver dollar but the contrast of silver next to the copper is appealing.

I will wager that these new 95% copper Proof Lincoln cent coins, while encapsulated and treated with the anti tarnish techniques by the Mint, will tone in short order.

I have some close up images of the 'log cabin' and 'unfinished capital' cents to share. I can see 'marks' in the matte fields as well as what looks like spots or wash/residue on the obverse. I can see these both with and without magnification. These images are shot with 10x and 26x loupes. I'm not sure what these things are but I'd like members to give their thoughts and to also post any issues you find with your LN6 sets, be they: errors, spots, tarnish, die problems, et al.

    Thanks.

Because I don't collect nor intensely search for error coins typically, I hadn't really considered posting this thread to the 'Error Coins' section until after initiating this thread. I guess I was concentrating on the spots and tarnish and don't really consider these issues 'errors' though I invited errors coins to this thread. If a Moderator or Administrator deems this topic better suited for the Error Coins discussion category. please close and or move this or let me know if I should instead open a new thread in Error coins. Thanks.

While this is not an error I would like to say how disappointed I am with the quality of this set. My presentation box was not even glued properly to the backing, it basically fell apart when I opened it. The coins were not facing the same direction. If they only had 50,000 to make I think they should have done a better job. Did I just get a bad set or are others having the same issues?

Others have gotten the coins in rotated positions though all reverse sides of cents were facing the same direction. I have not heard yet of the construction of the packaging falling apart as you have experienced. This is the primary problem with collecting items for their packaging, it deteriorates quickly and over time. The coins themselves don't seem to be a problem for you fortunately and that's what counts here ultimately.

I completely concur that the Mint must continue to do more to increase quality control, they let far too much slip through before it reaches the customer and the packaging is no less important. They decinitely create greater than 50K packages, sets of capsules, COAs and such in case of needing to replace during assembly of the sets. There's no reason a weakly constructed package should have coins put into it and sent to a customer.

The packaging shortcomings that SilverPanda mentions are a concern for me as well. The hot glue that the mint used to join the box together seems to have dried too quickly making the joint rather weak and feeble. Might have to employ the wife's glue gun in the near future.

Coins in rotated positions? Are we talkin' die rotation Chris? Or did a mint employee simply push the coin into the slot slightly off axis?

I thought he meant the encapsulated coins were either placed in crooked and all cent's facing reverse side out, silver coin obverse facing out -OR- that some cents were obverse out and others reverse out. The later would certain be a failing on behalf of QC.

Here's a couple of quick shots of the obverse of my Log Cabin cent that was in the LN6 set I got today. seems to have a planchet defect near the rim just off Lincoln's shoulder. sorry about the poor photos and sorry about the fuzz on the capsule :)

Wow! That's a pretty obvious mark. Tisk-tisk Mint QC. Does the mark bother you enough to sell your set?

Nah, I want to keep my set and since I can't really return it don't have much choice. Not worth the hassle of selling this one and buying another either. I already have other examples of these proof cents in my Proof Set and my Silver Proof Set too.
