Hello Everyone. This is my first post here. I intended to introduce myself in the intro thread (and still do) but I received my Lincoln Coin and Chronicles Set Saturday and there is something I hope you good people might help me with. The Lincoln Dollar Proof has what seems to be an odd struck through error above the right eye. It’s an incuse circle like a small letter O. The area in the center of the circle has satin luster like the rest of the devices although the light travels across this area in a different direction than the luster surrounding it. The bottom of the incuse area seems to also have a grainy luster although a bit rougher in texture. I’m stumped. I’ve seen this type of damage caused by staples and pins and such but never quite like this. I can’t account for what caused the circle nor the luster inside the circle rolling in a different direction but I have to admit I’ve only held a very few struck through errors over the last forty some odd years and I don’t know a lot about them. If the New Orleans Mint was still striking coins and applying their mintmark with a punch I might be able to come up with some outlandish theory but it’s not and I’m hoping you guys can help me out. It seems to me that whatever caused this might have left some similar damage in the die before falling away which might mean that there could be some Lincoln Commem’s with a raised circle in the same place. I have never had much more than a passing interest in error coins and because of that I’m at a loss with this coin. I would like to know what you all think, good or bad. I have attempted to take a few pictures. At least it’s different! Thanks. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/orangepatrol/dollar1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/orangepatrol/dollar3.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/orangepatrol/dollar4.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/orangepatrol/dollar6.jpg
Wow that is a pretty obvious little mess up there. Im not quite experienced enough to know what exactly to call it but I dont think its a strike through from the other side of the coin. Im also willing to bet since thats some type of obvious defect there will be others out there with the same/similar marking. Otherwise you have a one of a kind coin.
Welcome Orange-P, To me, especially in the bottom 3 pics it looks like milk spots to me. Milk spots are very common on modern coins that come directly from the US mint. I could be wrong so let's see what other ppl say.
Very cool. It is struck through a small perfectly round piece of scrap or maybe machinery. I can see it on eb*y now: "Lincoln with zit on forehead!!1"
Thanks fretboard, but no, It's fully 3 demensional. I wish I had a better camera for this sort of thing so you could see better that the circle has considerable depth to it.
Ha! Yes CashDude, I think it's kind of cool myself. I'm sure some people would already have it up on eb*y with some glttering descriptive in the title. I on the other hand would just like to reach a consensus with a few other collectors about what caused it before I put it up. It is perfectly round but I can't think of anything that tiny that could withstand a double strike and hold it's shape. It would seem that it might have gotten somewhat mushy looking during striking but If I'm off base here someone please tell me. Whatever it was, it was very small and very hard! Thanks
Those are amazing pics OrangeP, Abes eyes almost look he's looking back at you. Great job. Wish I could help with the blemish, but it has me stumped. BTW, welcome to CT.
ring worm??????????? I need to check mine more closely again..... welcome aboard....... It gets interesting here.. SS
Uh-oh! Lincoln got shot again! Doh! :rolling: Hey, nice find! May be a nice error to hang onto in case of premium for resale.
Any chance it could be a dropped letter? I don't have mine yet and don't know what's on the coin, ie. letters.
Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome. I just don't see how it could be a dropped letter being it's incuse and it'a a coin and not a die but if whatever caused this caused the same mark in the face of the die and fell away then the next coin struck would certainly appear to have a raised letter O in the same place .
Quite possibly a gem error of some type in that case. Good for you hope you find out what it is. It may be better for a person to have it in hand to help you. If you don't have a coin dealer nearby then maybe you can just kind of check out the error coins page on ebay every now and then and maybe you will see something listed. :high5:
Sorry rockdude. It dawned on me what you were saying after I posted. I can't find anything in the devices that would fill and drop anything like this. Maybe I'm overlooking something though.
