You forgot my favorite! The Gobrecht Pattern Dollars! So I voted for Bust. Someday I will own a Gobrecht, but not for a while!
I voted for Commem. dollars, but I also like Peace & SAC dollars. I never really liked Morgans, even though they seem to be everyone's favorite.
Wow Midas I would have never guessed you to go against the commonly accepted flow. No seriously you hear so much about how the Ike SAc and SBA are the ugliest dollars ever that it is refresing to find some one with whom I can agree with. I had to go with Ike myself but I was torn for a while between the stern and proud lady Anthony or the tough, gruff and respected Ike.
speeling Ike remineds me of my grandfather and SBA reminds me of my grandmother. Both images instill a deep patience and understanding while at the same time they imply a stolic unforgiving backbone. They make me think of family. The SAC only makes me wonder which mint artist would have ever though that Sacagwea would or could look chubby. I think the artist rendition, no matter how smooth and placating, presents a very poor representation of a stong, willing, and able woman. I would have prefered Sac to be standing on a small hill with the baby in a papous on her back facing a brisk wind. I think that would have been a much better representation of the native american pride, beauty and resolve. Of course this is my opinion so think what you will and say what you wish, Its your right.
I was only kidding about the SBA. This coin along with the SAC obverse are coins to make the PC "bleeding hearts" happy. Many at the mint along with the C.C.A.C. have stated that liberty or some new depitction of her is just "too political" for US coins. It just like those liberal art colleges that have removed US flags from their campus as they didn't want to offend international students. I would be marching right down the middle of campus with the largest flag and sign stating, "Offended??... THEN LEAVE!" See what happens when politics are introduced into coin designs instead of symbols of liberty and true artistry? You get the wicked witch of the west on dollar coins! Here, here to the "Carter-Quarter". You have to ask yourself what the mint and CCAC were thinking!?! Quick...sombody get some make up!
Well, had to vote for the IKE Dollar. I personally like the Ike Dollar because of the challange of collecting the series in high grades. I've been trying to put together a set for a few years now in high MS grades. If you collect them you already know what I mean. Regular strikes over MS 65 are extremely hard to find, and are beautiful coins. From a collectibilty standpont I like the Peace Dollar, Sorry to all you Morgan fans. But, The design, especially if you can find the strong strikes is beautiful- Not to mention the set is realtivey easy to put together.
Morgan, Morgan, nur nicht heute... If you look at U.S. patterns (see here: www.uspatterns.com), you come to understand that William Barber and Charles Barber and GEORGE MORGAN spent their working days, day in and day out, cutting dies for coins. They experimented. They did the hard work every day. On the other hand, Gobrecht and Reich on the one hand, and the outsiders like McNeil and DeFrancisci on the other, did not have that opportunity. The bottom line is that the Morgan Dollar is an easy choice for Best Dollar because it is perfectly executed. There is an ineffable "something" to the coin -- the sum total of its major design elements, but also, how they are arranged, their proportions, etc. -- that make the Morgan Dollar undeniable. I say that even though I do not "like" the coin. Financially, economically, and politically, the Morgan Dollar is about the worst coin in the world. It is all but evil, the result of political shenanigans between the miners and Congress. And yet, it is such a nice coin...
