What grade would you give these coins?

Thanks for the advice. I know some coin companies will grade lower if you allow them to, do you happen to know if ngc will cross-grade lower if you specify that is okay?

I sent in a NICE 1982 Washington Comm to ANACS that was in a case that I couldn't open without hurting the coin....it came back PF68HEVYCAMEO....and they took the case off great....let the grading Co. do it...

I talked to some dealers today about the coins, and they told me they were not rare, even at high grades, and then offered me less than what I paid for them. I'm pretty sure they are rare at high grades.... Unscrupulous dealer?

 

Maybe that is because they are in PCI holders right now....did they see the coin in person??...
Still...I wouldn't go to them again...

They didn't see the coins, but they said deep cameos, even in pcgs holders of similar grades are very common coins. I think they are full of it.

 

I stand corrected. I wasn't thinking about "cross at any grade" in which case they would be removed. I was thinking direct cross only, in which case they wouldn't open the plastic unless they thought it would cross directly (a long shot indeed).

That said I would still have someone else submit it for me if it was mine. And I'd not return to the dealers who didn't know what they were talking about.

 

I've been looking at a lot of auctions with coins in similar grades, and these coins are as nice if not nicer than any 67's I've seen, which means PCI actually did a decent grading job

 

Are they in the OLD PCI holders or the new ones??...the old ones have a green rim on the lables and the new ones have gold on the rim??....
I have seen FEW coins in higher grades that I agreed with PCI on...I have seen some lower grade coins that I liked but not many.

They are in the new ones, and from my experience, are almost always overgraded. I have some old hallmark ones (green) and they are much better graded. I still think that pci graded a little high though in this case, I'm not good at grading, I'm just assuming this by comparing the coins I have to other coins that are pcgs and ngc or anacs certified.

 

Well, they were shipped off to Anacs this morning, 2-day express as I'm eager to find out what they get graded. : )

Here is a sad lesson. I bought these two coins a man named jeff wherlin, aka jwcameo on ebay. I bought a goodly sum for them. This was when I had more or less a complete lack of numismatic knowledge. I didn't even truly understand cams and dcams then. Back when I bought this, I was a struggling college student.

I paid 700 for the pair, thinking I got a great deal, as those coins looked uber cam. Excitedly, I paid for a PCGS membership, and walked through the coins. Neither even came back a 66, let alone even cameo. So then I tried anacs (it may have been in reverse order). Same deal. All said and done I lost nearly 1000 dollars on the two coins.

It was although a lesson worth learning.

Also, airedale, the only way I could produce a photo showing before and after would be to:
A. buy expensive camera equipment or
B. Buy a coin from jeff, show his picture, and the take one myself.

Neither of which are worth my time or effort.

 

I should add that the reason the coins didn't come back higher than a 66 (something I understand now), was that they were BLAST WHITE. TPG's don't like to grade them higher than 65's, as they lack the eye appeal that the coins with the black mirrors have. Now either Jeff sent me the wrong coins, or he altered his photos. I'll let you folks decide.

 

Dang-it Big Z, guess those coins sure fooled a lot of people as I go back reading thru the thread. Sorry to hear about the trouble...

Without a doubt Ben. I wish I had had a decent camera back then, as all I would have had to do is post some pictures of the coin, and people would have been ushering me to return them. You win some, you lose some. It took me several months to recover from this, and I felt quite daft for a while. Nonetheless it opened my eyes to the less than scrupulous people out there, and told me that I had a lot to learn.

Zane , Sorry to hear about the final outcome , but I am totally confused when I read this thread from start to finish. It sounded as if you diidn't know the grade to start , then you did, then at some point sent them to PCGS , then to ANACS and then I guess that was it. So now , what are you left with ? Did either or both TPG'S crack out the coins or are they still in the PCI slabs ? Were the original pictures yours or the sellers ? If possible I'd like to see a few more pics of the coins. Also , did you submit the coins in the PCI slabs or did you crack them out ?

 

It is a sad lesson. I just read the thread beginning to end and was really excited for you until I reached the end. Lessons worth learning should come much cheaper...

Thank you for sharing with us a bad experience as you may save me or others from a similar fate. I know that was not your intent when you started but it takes a lot of character and heart to share the end result.

I constantly have to remind myself that I have no idea what I am doing and not to get too carried away. I have had a few minor lessons and without advice from someone I can trust I will try to keep my exposure limited to those small lessons. I hope you find a way to make up the loss and never have to experience anything like this again.
