Cent Error Coin?

Hi all, I just finished searching a bank roll of cents and came across this interesting specimen below (sorry the pictures aren't great). Given how weak the strike is across all features on the obverse it seems that a second blank planchet might have interfered with a full strike - is this what happened? Something else? or is this just PMD? If it is actually an error, how common is it and is it worth anything?

    Thanks!

Welcome Belisarius to the forum. It's definitely a error, something like a struck through die cap, mated pair with something else added to that. Others will know the exact term. Nice find.

I think i see some of the design in the recessed area, in the spot the date should be there looks look there are some marks?
Do you have any better pics of this area?

I don't have any better pics of that area yet (maximum magnification with my current lenses), but I have some other magnifiers on order this week & will try to get a better pic then. You are right that there does seem to be a very very faint something there, I can't quite tell what it is, possibly 1979 or 89? It is definitely wide AM so that narrows down the date range somewhat.

@Jello - pretty surprised I found it in the first bank box I opened (only had to look at 2,500 pennies)! Any idea how often something like this turns up?

This looks to me like it was struck thru a late stage die cap as mentioned above and it is also a double error with an indent. It looks like a second planchet was sitting on the right side of the coin when it was struck creating the indent.

Pyrbob's diagnosis is correct. The coin was struck through a late-stage die cap and also indented by a planchet that intruded between the die cap and the planchet represented by this coin.

Too bad there's no date. It's a Wide AM so it's pre-1993. It also looks uncirculated, so it must've slipped out of someone's collection.

Very cool to have two errors in the coin! Thanks for your help in identifying them. This find will definitely keep me searching rolls & boxes for awhile! I will get a scale to weigh it to see if we can further refine the date range to pre or post-1982. Any recommendations for a good quality scale at a good value?

Mike beat me to it. Pyrbob is right and of course Mike backed that up. I agree with the diagnosis and it is a very nice error coin!

    Thanks,
    Bill

    Better Pictures

I have been trying to take better pictures of this coin, but haven't gotten anywhere yet. I have figured out how to post better versions of the prior pictures though, posted below.
