Was reading a small article in Error Trends coin magazine, by Fred Weinburg. In 2001, 40 coins were stolen from a hotel room, 12 of these coins were recovered at an estate sale. Here is a list of some of the coins recovered; Standing Liberty Quarter Struck on a cent, Walking Liberty Half Struck on a nickel, 1899 Indian Cent Struck over a Struck 1899 Barber Dime, 1936 Buffalo Nickel on a silver dime, and a 1944-S Wash. Quarter Struck on a Steel Cent Planchet. Thought this was interesting and would share it with those who don't get Error Trends mag.. Personally, if I were a thief, I wouldn't steal something that is probably one of a kind, and try to sell it.

The article says they were stolen in April 2001. The owner was taking the coins to the Central States Show to have them photographed for a book on errors.

It would be a good idea to check the coin forums that you look at. People will show coins that they stole and list them as their own.

He probably didn't intend to. The thief probably broke into the hotel room of a guy he knew was a coin dealer or collector and grabbed a case of coins. Then later discovered that he had a pile of unique pieces that would be spotted the instant he tried to sell any of them. So he waited for years hoping the statute of limitations would run out and then dumped them in an estate sale hoping to get something out of them because he still couldn't sell them into the main market without them being recognized. Kinda like the guys who pulled off the 1967 DuPont robbery. They got away but then they look at their haul and what have they got? TWO genuine 1804 dollars, a Brasher doubloon, the unique set of 1866 no motto quarter, half and dollar seated coins etc. Worth a fortune, and utterly unsaleable.

Those are some unbelievable errors. I had a dream last night that I found a 1905 V Nickel struck on a 1905 Barber Dime. It was the size of a nickel. I hope he gets the rest back.
