I utterly hate the US MINT.........(Braille education set)

So historically any commemorative coin with a mintage of 55,000 or less is worth buying for long term value. So when I saw the braille education set, even though it is unpopular, I figured it would be a good buy. It is a gamble on the public's view of whether or not this paper trend will last, personally I think it will.

Now the hard part.......My Braille set came in the box, I opened the box and see inside that the set is sealed in plastic, I can't even open the freakin book to look inside. So now I have this question, do I hold off the enjoyment of looking at the coin, because I know if this damn paper popularity trend lasts, then the sets that retained their plastic wrap will be worth a lot more, because you know most every person who gets one will want to look inside having to break the seal.

Poop on a brick! And is my long awaited Lincoln Chronicles set gonna have the stupid plastic wrap on it as well?

if you want to sell it later donw the road and dont care about the actual coin itself - then you have an easy choice to make - dont open it.

If, however, you like collecting commems, then again, its an easy choice - open the box, enjoy the coin, and then if you ever want to sell the set - then do so - but at least you were able to enjoy the coin from now till then :)

I like to look at what I buy and I seldom buy a coin with the thought of selling it down the road. It's your choice and there's only two ways to go on this. Either open it or don't open it!! :D

Perhaps if all you want is to look at the book then watch ebay for sellers selling just the book. I picked up a UHR book on eBay just to look at a couple months before buying the actual coin from the Mint, now the set I bought has a sealed book in it. Sets that have been opened by others to obtain the coin for grading will often sell their packages, boxes, books which you can easily pick up. Save your sealed set for you resale plans. And no, the LN6 has not been sealed from what others have posted in the LN6 threads here on CT so far. Look for pictures member SirCharlie uploaded of the set earlier this week to see how the LN6 sets are packed. Hope this helps and that you don't hate the Mint for this.

Another more expensive idea may be to buy another Braille from the mint and use that one as your "display" coin.

I would open it. I can't imagine buying a coin from the mint and not wanting to enjoy it. If your sole purpose for buying it was the hopes you might make money off it and you don't care about the coin..then leave it as is. But, if you care about the coin (even a little) then open it.

I maybe in the minority here, but I like coins, and I do not buy them for investment purchases - I buy them to look at and enjoy.

When or if I get the Lincoln Chronicle set, I am opening it up and looking at it. Other than getting a very few, less than 10, of the cents in change - I have not seen them. Of course it will come in the post whilst I am in Ukraine so I cannot enjoy it.

You are in no minority about that! If I think I can flip a coin or set and also like it myself, I'll try to get at least two of them, one for me to enjoy and the other to flip. If I have to open it up to enjoy the only set I want to also flip, I know I can still sell it, but maybe not for the highest possible flip. It depends on what you have your intentions set on I guess. Definitely love the coin and enjoy it if you are keeping it, don't covet plastic and the article you can't see wrapped in a box just sitting in your collection. IMO

I tossed around ordering the Braille Commem from the U.S. mint, but decided to leave it out my order. But now I'm having second thoughts. Yeah, it's an unattractive design that I'm not really in love with, yet at the same time the mintages will be pretty low because of that. I consider myself more of a collector than aninvestor, so maybe I made the right choice.

I think you made the right choice. Why spend money on a coin you don't like in the hopes of maybe making a little money on it because others didn't like it...and thus the mintage was low. It seems to me that these commemoriatives typically are minted to appease the collector. If they aren't popular when not a ton are made...so they have a low mintage due to low demand. Who knows if that demand will ever change.

I don't think the demand will ever change. I picked this commem as a dud the minute I saw it. It's not that I don't respect Mr. Braille, but I personally think there could have been a much more flattering design to put on a coin issued by the U.S. mint.

I completely agree. So, my thought is the low mintage won't ever make it valuable because of the low demand...so you made the right choice as a collector and an investor. ;)

Thank you for making me feel better about my decision, Camaro. Maybe next year I'll like the commems better.
