Let me quote a little computer terminoligy for you FIFO. First in First out. He may have gotten 50-100+ 2009's in before your coin. So of course the first coin that comes in will be looked at first. It dosn't matter the year on the coin, but the order in which it was recieved.

I went and read thourgh this and here's what I really think.

I went back and read though all these pages to try and be fair but I cannot figure out why anyone, I mean anyone who thinks this coin is anything other than zinc rot, is not only wrong but seriously lacking in common knowledge (regarding copper coated Lincoln's) and need to go back to school.

This coin never needed to go to Potter or CONECA of anywhere except the trash - I throw them in there everyday just like this coin. I refuse to put them back into circulation, why bother somebody else with trash.

Now I know what your thinking, play nicey nice Ben and do not disturb or insult anyone, well, I'll try.

Here is the reasons why it is not anything but zinc rot.

As stated we (who have searched hundreds of thousands of Lincoln's) have seen this same type rot thousands of times.
Nothing in the minting process could, does or ever would cause this type damge other than moisture getting under the plating.
There was no handpunching or placing of any devices, date or mintmark at the time of this coins production that could possible contribute to this coin other than moisture and of course no dropped letter, (God help us all)!!!

So all this over moisture getting into the zinc core, rot? It's an embaressment to say the least, a waist of time and energy for all.
It's also counterproductive to learning. Just look at the amount of time, energy, photos along with some very knowlegable peoples input, time and effort that has been waisted on this issue.
Are we to (for the sake of nicey nice), go along with anything a member says (and keeps alive) because of the fear we might somehow offend them?
If one person can give one good reason why this person was advised to send this rotten coin off to an expert and also waist their time I'd sure like to what it is. The only valid resaon would be because this person is not, would not and could not be satisfied with our prevous explanations and had to be shown. If that is so it tells me that we are not willing to say enoughs enough on occasion and help people to learn to help themselfs.
How many double struck nickle lies and cheats, S/S's, mechanical doubling, phantom this or re-blanked that are we going to need to sort through before we can help those that really want to learn?
Yes, we first need to tell them what it is and why. Plus other things they can learn and places to go to get that knowledge, but just how many times do we do it and at what expence to others?
I have never went to learn anything new and then argued or challenged the people who really know what they are doing. I mean do you wake up from the surgery and tell the doctor I think you did not do such and such.
I mean I find this absurd to the point of insane (and less than mature to say the least) why we continue to cater to people (after a point) when it goes beyond the point of what's reasonable to expect them to question.
It was perfectly clear in this thread that the ones challeging did not know very much and the minting process. There is nothing wrong with that at all. But when do we tell them to sit down and read the books, look at thousands of coins and learn for yourself so you can effectivly argue and post valuble questions.
Sending this coin off to anyone was the worst advice this person could have ever gotten - it holds us all in suspence of nothing and nothing is a waist of time.

    Jessash1976,

If I'm reading your post correctly and please feel free to tell me if I'm not...

If you sent in a 2009 cent for an attribution, what may seem simple can be more than meets the eye. There are so many 2009 die varieties being found that if yours happens to be a new one, it would have to be compared with maybe 30 other die varieties in the files of perhaps 5 or 6 attributors, for example before it can be declared as new.

It would be the same process even if the coin was not a new discovery since there are so many others that it would have to be compared to.

Some of the 2009 die varieties are so close to each other when they are compared to one another that miniscule, microscopic die markers come in to play to determine one die variety from another.

I do attributions too but I don't keep files so I don't get too heavy in to that at all. I stay basic, is something a doubled die or not, for example. I don't want to get into the complications of figuring out on a new variety whether or not the coin is #23 or #47 :)

The guys that do that like Potter, Wexler, and all the rest are careful and precise. It is more than looking at a coin and saying Yes or No:) it's a doubled die or it isn't:)

There is so much more behind he scenes of attribution than people realize:)

Tell me what you think the coin is as it may not be another of the 2009 die varieties...PM me if you don't want to let any cats out of any bags. It will remain confidential.

    Thanks,
    Bill

That will be enough. People get frsutrated, I can see that. But the easy way to avoid it is to just not post to the thread. If somebody wants to send a coin in to somebody, that's their business and they can do so. Everybody has stated their opinion, now drop it and let it go.

I really don't want to close the thread but I will if this continues.

Hey, I am confused. I sent in a 1986D-rpm for attribution and the coin was sent back saying that it was a new one. I am happy for this, but with my coin also came a letter that said it would be added to the site that week. That was in August. I am just waiting for my info to be added to his site. You know, the pics, the info and so forth. I already paid him for it, so I amjust waiting for the rest. I won't stomp on Michelle's post anymore so if you want to see my coin, I posted pics earlier on this post. I was just complaining about all the 2009 "new" varieties. I think people do get to far into than they should. I am sure these attribution are making somebody a quick buck, but I won't send something in unless I now for a fact it is worth my time.

    Hi jessie,

Believe me when I tell you that some folks get so busy with the attributions and regular life that they can't keep up with the web work:) I've been there and done that:)

    Congrats on the new listing!!

Well, I finally got the word from Ken Potter. He is a very nice man. He called back and left a message over the weekend. I got it when we got back from Huntsville...Anyway. He confirmed it was a rot spot, environmental damage..I learned a lot about the minting process, and want to thank everyone who helped by explaining how it worked. I enjoyed that part of it very much. I will keep searching and having fun with this for as long as pennies are in existence. Thanks everyone...and especially Bill, who really went beyond the call of duty to help. Mucho gracious....

I found one of these yesterday and the D is turned sideways and is over next to Abe's vest with and o beside it, the date is where it is suppose to be but is very faint, the IBE in liberty is completely gone and the Y is faint. If I can get my digital camera going I will post some pictures, here or start a new thread?

The results were that it was environmental damage and a rot spot...even though it looks quite clearly like a four and a five on the 1994, the environment did that...and the zinc rot. Have fun hunting...and this is a great place for information!!!:)
