The spouses are getting really pricey. If they stay this high I may pass on the next one.

on wednesday. the mint will increase its prices for spouse gold again. only if the gold average price pass over $1,049.99 per ounce. today. it reached a high of $1,060.30 per ounce. average for three days is $1,051.46 an ounce.

new prices if gold pass $1,049.99:
    proof - $704.00
    unc - $691.00

in this case. e-bay proof 69 can reach as high as $880.00 and unc. at $865.00.

What makes you think a graded MS69/PR69 example would ever sell for $150-$200 higher than an uncertified example straight from the Mint??????

Just about all of these First Spouse coins grade either 69 or 70 and I have seen 69s sell at a discount to uncertified coins because in this series, a 69 grade pretty much represents a bottom of the barrel low-end coin. At least with an uncertified example, a buyer has a shot at the 70 grade so a buyer is willing to pay more than they will for an already graded 69 which is essentially the lowest the straight from the Mint coin would ever grade anyways.

now it looks like letitia tyler might be the lowest on the unc version. and also the total (unc + proof) mintage.

    van buren's liberty unc - 4,058
    anna harrison unc - 2,967
    letitia tyler unc - 2,339
    julie tyler unc - 2,149
    sarah polk unc -1,824

clearly letitia tyler might be the lowest mintage. both proof and unc combined. proof, and uncirculated too.

I recently spoke with a high volume dealer in my area who said they had just sent a number of first spouses to the foundary because there was no retail market for them.

If you go to the websites of the big dealers who post both "buy" and "sell" prices , you might be surprised.

The Mint only sold nine (9) Anna Harrison Uncs in the past week! And that was probably just your order. :D

After the first year or so, stories started to come out that Silver Towne and other larger dealers were sending the first 2 FS coins that came out, off to be melted because there were so many of them and the demand wasn't there. Unfortunately, from what I understand from my local coin dealer who apparently has direct connections with Silver Towne, that records were not kept of the exact amount of coins that were melted.

I would imagine that if anyone is going to send these coins off to be melted that it would have been any of the coins that were from 2007. All the coins from 2008 and later have fairly low mintages.

remember the bullion related FS gold were those without box and c.o.a. a complete set is much much higher. check apmex and golden eagle coin company.

ex: apmex selling martha washington unc. without box and c.o.a. is $580.60. with box and c.o.a is $620.65. see the different. original cost is $410.95.
