Let the rest of us in on it, kemosabe. I'm guessing you should never cross the golf clubs until after the round is played.
Sorry, guys, I'm gonna have to go Ocean in View. The Peace Medal design is too dull, and the Keelboat is more reminiscent of ancient trading vessels than of anything American. The Bison nickel is nice looking, and it comes a close second, but I like the tranquility that I feel when I look out over the Oregon coastline and the Pacific Ocean. Out of the state quarters, so far I would have to say that I like the Minnesota, Oregon, California, Iowa, and New York quarters in that order as my top five.
That's Scottish/Celtic etiquette your referring to I think Having the pipe bowl pointing down is not typically symbol of peace, it is normally quite the opposite. When two people smoked pipes, the smoke started as two separate strands, representing the separate nature and minds of the individuals. As the smoke would mingle and become indistinguishable, the symbolism followed suit. So the contents of the pipe were deeply tied to the concepts of peace. The reverse of the peace nickel shows the pipe turned over which would dump out the contents and so "dump out" the peace. Of course we couldn't have the hatchet blade pointing up to match the proper position of the pipe b/c then we'd be in the same boat again.
Pipe ? Hatchet ? I thought it was a driver and a four-iron. But, that's interesting. Learned something new today, I guess I can go home now.
got me curious too....so I did a bit more research. I guess in some indian cultures....the pipe was smoked in a ceremony declaring war....so I guess an overturned pipe would become a peace symbol. I haven't been able to find out if this was true of the indians Lewis and Clark encountered. Either way....its a dull design that would be greatly spiced up by a golf ball or a water hazard....O! Wait!....they added it to the reverse of the 4th coin
Ah, now I see the continuity of the design. Good observation ! Most folks wouldn't have made the connection. I should have; when I tried golf, I could never hit the ball past water.
The Bison is my FAVORITE! I have bought proofs, bank rolls, and satin bisons and put them away but, in the end, my dealer and I have agreed the Ocean in View will probably be the "keeper" of the series and the SATINS will be king! Time will tell!
New Member and new nickels Hello I am a new member here...I have been looking for a place to discuss the new nickel program. I wish coin world would add a page to their website devoted to the new nickels...I would love to know the final production numbers. I am puzzled why the mint is still selling the bison nickel since Ocean in View came out early august. I have been loving the peace nickel...well the peace P nickels as their value has SOARED. A box of $100 is going for $850 and UP, and the 2 roll mint sets are going for $80 and up...what a great investment. I am not sure how the bison nickels will do as it seems the production number is going to be way up there. I have not seen the OV coin yet, but I got a few bank boxes of them and they seem to be already going for $175 and up. I am wondering which way the values of these boxes will be going and if I should hold on to them for a while. I have boxes of the bison's and OVs, and I have just one box of the Peace P rolls...which those I know to hold on to as I see them at close to $2000 in time.
I think you're dreaming...these coins are so numerous that their long term value will be significantly lower than their short term value. DOn't get me wrong, I have some of each as well, but I think that your expectation of a $2000 box is out of line with reality. my 2¢
touchekidd, First...welcome to the forum I believe cave-Troll is right. The coins, particularly the buffs, are being hoarded in such high numbers that their value will never really be higher than it is now. It may go up a little more, but over time it will drop off, specially when all those who are hoarding them try to "cash in" on their investment. These coins are not likely to ever be "rare".
Interersting thoughts...thanks.....but it leaves me wondering why so many poeple are buying these boxes at $800 and better...can they all be so misinformed. I think the Peace P boxes of $100 will remain at $1000 and up and the OV will hoover at $200-$250...unless any errors are discovered and then the value will be higher. I also think the P OVs will be worth more than the Ds. The bisons may just be way over produced so maybe they will level out at $125-$150 for a box of $100. I guess we will just have to see how it goes...for now I am holding on to what I have.
Although I do think the nickle prices are inflated at this moment I do think the Peace Medal P nicklel could crack that 2000 mark. I think the Ocean View nickles will also go up alot. I have had to buy mine from a dealer because none of the banks in town can get them. Most banks have told me that they cannot order them anymore. They keep assuring me that they have tried and tried, course that doesn't mean much since it's second hand information, they could just be pulling mt leg to get me to quit bugging them.
I get the exact same runaround from my bank when I ask for rolls of Standing Liberty Quarters. I think I’ll change banks.
You might be using the same bank I was.... I switched to the Federal Non-Committal Establishment of the Housing of Currency in Arizona Bank, and they almost never seem to run out of them! You should try there, too.
I have been getting some rolls at two small US Bank branches. One branch limits them to 3 per request--which is why, I suppose, they still have some. I thought that was a good way to do it to ensure that as many customers as possible get some.
Banks I do not believe the banks have a responsibility to stock mint fresh rolls, you want nickels, they give you nickels.Of course I would agree it is nice when they have them but cut them some slack.
I how we are both right about the Peace nickels cracking $2000. I see you think the OVs will go up alot as well. May I ask you what is the reason you feel this. Was the production number very low, or just a gut feeling? I am sitting with 10 boxes of those OVs....and keeping my fingers crossed. I also have 10 boxes of Bisons but I do not think they will do well as the production number must be super high as the mint is STILL selling them!
In the end the Ocean in View and Buffalo SATINS out of the mint sets WILL BE the king of single coins and, keeping in mind, the mint only sold 800,000 mint sets last year, well the satins and proofs should be keepers. My wife and I have quite a few bank rolls and mint rolls stashed awasy but SO DOES EVERYONE ELSE so I am banking on the higher grade satin coins to come out on top when all the speculating in over with. We will know in just a couple short years what we all have done right or wrong!
