I can't disagree with that more...I see no way the 2004 or 2005 nickels are going to be worth something...give it a few years and I think we will see the hype of these coins go to where it should....$0.05 each. Speedy
When asked what he collected, Walter Breen answered, "Knowledge." Breen actually invested in knowledge. It made him a highly regarded expert. At his peak, there was a series of "Walter Breen Auctions." These were not coins from his collection, but the materials of others that he attributed. Taking a leaf from that book, I invest in knowledge. (Who was the model for the Seated Liberty coins?)
Very well said!!! The world would be a much better place if we ALL invested in a little more knowlege!!
100% collector……but 15% of my retirement plan is investing in coins and bullion. Witch I use as an excuse to hang out at the locale coin shop.
I am a collector. I believe that one should invest in stocks, land and bullion gold. However, even if my gold coins are not investments at least I know that they will always have potential for "gold worth growth" if I need to sell.
Hey.. to tell the "Truth" I am Bi-Coinage...hahah could'nt resist that one!! But surely I am a collector of "American" coins with exceptional beauty"after all beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and I am also an investor. Many of you know that I invest in gold eagles and have assembled well over 60 AGE and I even posted pics of the complete 1/10 th oz and 1/4 oz sets. Still working on the 1/2 oz and 1/3 of the way done with 1986-2005 (thats 7- 1/2 oz AGE's) I have 4 1oz AGE at the moment and 1 1900 $20.00 Liberty Eagle. I also have been working on the gold commems (modern) low mintage issues and have 4 of them..Wright Bros Prf, Smithsonian Prf, Washington Prf and Uncirc, I have all the ASE Uncirculated in multiples of 10 each...I have began a Platinum collection/investment with 1/10 oz proof and uncirc to date it is 45% complete. From my early days of collecting I had assembled a ful;lset of Proof Cameo Franklin halves and have sold them all off for Gold and made a tidy profit I must say. I also collected CC Morgans and sold them all off years ago (stupid me) but made a very nice profit. I have every mint set and Proof set from 1980 forward to date...some in duplicate. I have rolls of ASE that are for investment, rolls of Sac's, Rolls of Frankies. I concentrate on the entire series of Gold Eagles both Proof and Uncirc and will one day have them all...lofty goal huh? So there ya have it..I am both! But most of all I am a Marine!! (had to get that one in there) RickieB
I am a collector/investor. I love to collect coins and have thought of selling some of my more valuable coins, then I think of how much I would regret not having them anymore. I have sold some recently found silver coins, as long as the silver value is up I may still do that for our vacation fund. The hunt is most of the fun.
I am a collector through & through - it shows in my other collections of various things that I have piled high. I guess another term would be "packrat".
Well put. I try and invest in wisdom, and all to often, I end up collecting mistakes... but I'm getting better!
Initially? I was a pure collector, but alas, as I was collecting I noticed that my stuff was going up in price--getting more expensive, hmm, at that point I played a little, won a little lost a little. Coins as an investment I have already learned is like the stock market, it has its ups N downs--So what am I now?, I am still a collector that now collects and invests--- hehehe, are you confused yet?? As an investor tho I suck--all that I have collected so far I do not want to sell, some investor eh?/hahaha, I guess I am back to the "initially" part--
collector or investor i finally think i am a 66% investor and 33% collector. because even i collect it. but i always thinking of profit in the future. i rarely sell any. but i knew i am a investor more than a collector.
I don't know. I keep buying them to make money, but I've never sold one in 45 years. I guess I'm a hoarder. I even have my first Yeoman Red Book 13th edition. I signed it Nov 12, 1960.
I collect primarily because I love the coins and the history that goes with them. Each coin is a piece of art, some worth more than others depending on their condition and state. I often sell off duplicates in my collection to purchase more that I don't have. Sometimes a real deal comes along that can be considered an investment. But most of my profits go back into the collection.
investor or collector by buying more and more and thinking of more profit in the future. now i am consider myself more investor (95%)than collector(5%).
I am both. I think there is probably a continuim between pure collector and pure investor, and we all fall somewhere on that line. If PURE INVESTOR is a 1 and PURE COLLECTOR is a 10, I would have to say I am about a 7.
To add to my last post, I don't think a 1 or a 10 actually exists. Even the most profit minded investor has to admit that the coin they are holding is interesting because of its history and artistic merit etc., and even the most die hard collector will have to admit that they would be pleased if a coin they bought for $50.00 shot up in price to $200.00 the next month, even if they have no intentions of selling.
But pure investors do exist - they are known as coin dealers. There is another type as well - individuals who buy high end coins and rarities with no thought to collecting, history or artistic merit. Most of the time they don't even physically possess the coins themselves. And if the price moves up enough to show them a reasonable profit, they will sell in a flash without even blinking an eye.
