For quite awhile I was using the pricing guide built into CoinManage to give me a rough idea as to the value of my Canadian coins. Recently however, I picked up a 2007 edition of the Krause Guide for 20th Century coins and a 2008 Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins. My question is this... did I miss something and not notice Canadian coin prices skyrocket from 2007 to 2008, or are the guys at Charlton smoking the drapes with their over-inflated prices? Coins on eBay rarely get sold for book value (unless they are rarities), but I can see a correlation between the selling prices and the CoinManage and Krause guides. The Charlton Catalogue on the otherhand, well, let's just say that according to those guys I'm a very rich man who got most of his Canadian coins at a pitance of their true value. I'd be interested in hearing the thoughts of other Canadain coin collectors on the Charlton Catalogues!
I find the Charlton prices to be high as well, but I use Pierre Charest's book and find his prices to be low. Unfortunately, there's no way to be more accurate. I'd use the Charlton prices when filing for insurance purposes, though.
I never bothered to read the preface and introduction to the book (I just dove right in), so maybe they explain how they arrived at their pricing there. I'll have to take a closer look when I get home from work!
It is just a guide and coins go up and down in value. Usually from what I have seen the Canadian coin news is used sometimes in pricing since it reflects going market value.
I have to totally agre the values in Charleton are any where from a dollar or two above Krause to double or more than. Charleton has more details & even goes in to higher grades other than BU. So as silly as this sounds I find it so hard to believe that a 1964 Canadian 10 cent in Gem BU is worth $45. I've seen some on ebay for 38 but I just feel like that's to high. So I'm curious on what other's opinions are?
The only price guide I would trust is the "trends" section in "Canadian coin news" newspaper. It is currently being revamped by Michael Findlay and he has been doing an outstanding job IMO, the prices are accurate and the recent adjustements seem to be accepted by most dealers. I would highly suggest picking up a copy. I only use the Charlton guide for mintages and to identify varieties and such.
CCN has the best pricing info for CDN coins - and to second Snaz, Michael has been doing a stellar job. i'll see him in a few weeks and let him know how much his hard work is appreciated
