Gunk in die?

While roll searching, I found this nickel with most of the inscriptions very light. Front of buff's head is weak, too. Is this a case of the die getting gunked up? My first thought when I found it was "Why would someone grind it off?" but there is no evidence of any grinding marks under magnification.

It was an exciting find for this newbie!!! Anxious to hear what you guys think!

What you have is a greased filled die.

It was definitely struck through grease. Its a pretty common error.

 

2005 type 1 & 2 had a lot of odd strike

How about "STG" = struck through grease!!!!!

 

Grease.. Even I can see that

 

I would have guessed that as well, until I noticed it continues even onto Jefferson's forehead. Looks like damage from a vending machine to me.
