Is it rust on the cheek? Do you think its worth for $200?

    shatsi,
I did a little looking around and found an NGC GSA 1884 CC MS63 for $185 from a place called Island Coins, so $200 might be a tad high. Also an auction on numismedia.com brought a high bid of $185 for the same coin.... Any thoughts GD?

can't be rust - I think it's just some sort of gunk. It should probably be removed from the coin, though.

I wonder if NGC would do that, if you sent it in. Their conservation department would probably charge you, but you might be able to bypass regrading fees, if you just tell them to reslab it under the same seriel numbers - which they probably wouldn't do - just a thought.

Some kind of impurity. I wouldnt buy it for $50. Sometimes you cant avoid marks, especially on frosted coins, but I would avoid the carbon/impurity marks.

I decided against it. Thank you for your advice.

    Mikejo, that was fast, thanks.

I liked the look on the coin but not very comfortable with the spot. And I don't like toned coins so it wouldn't work out either way.
I'll look into the site that Mikejo recommended.

ohhh... I thought it was yours.

another thing to consider is that it might not be on the coin, at all... not to sound crass, but it could be a booger on the case. hard to know from the picture.

Not mine, I wish, I don't own any CC morgans. Looking forward for my first.

I asked the seller about the spot and he said its toning. So its definitly on the coin.

Has that one you bought been dipped?

I'm the world's worst at detecting cleaned coins, making me an easy mark at times ;) but the complete lack of toning would automatically make me suspect that it is dipped whether it has been or not.

Silver can't rust...so I would say it is what Tallpaul000 said--

As for the other coin....I don't think its been cleaned (it is said that most of the Morgan dollars have been dipped at one time or another...and most if not all of the WHITE UNC coins you see from years ago have been dipped to make them stay WHITE and not toned.)---the pics are hard to tell but I would say MS62/3

I'd say taking a pass on the $200 was a wise choice. The mark is toning.

As for the '89, I'd agree with Speedy.

Thanks. I too thought the 1889 would be atleast MS62 but then again I'm new at this. Its just for my collection and I'm not planning on sending to be graded or anything. I mostly go by eye appeal and $20 is not a bad price I thought.
