in the future, which one will command a better price?. are there any differences? i noticed that the u.s. mint just selling rolls which begin at 50 statehood quarters. they are wrapped beautifully and neat. the colorful designed on its paper wrap. while the private or coin dealers. some bought it from the mint on bulk. and some were able to change it from banks. what is your opinion?.

The special mint wrapped rolls will always bring a higher price. The Bank rolls were wrapped with coins that were delivered in Mint bags and will have bag marks. So, in theory at least, The mint rolls will have higher quality coins.

    rolls from the mint

but so far since 1999, the dealers price list or cdn (grey sheet) doesn't stated difference prices yet. maybe it will take longer time to figure it out or simply because since long time ago. rolls will simply considered good when it was from the bank or prepared by private or dearlers. and the complete thing is control by dealers too. so the mint rolls might not have a premium at all. but it is good to keep the mint rolls i guess. remember, mint rolls is a little bit expensive too. we can buy dealer's rolls at 33% less.

I confess I haven't been looking at many rolls in recent years but the people
who do are telling me that there is no real difference between the types of
rolls. Gems and varieties are issued by the mint at random and might appear
from any source. Marking is caused at each stage of handling and it doesn't
matter if the mint does it or a counting house.

The mint rolls may already have some premium in some cases (like the nickels)
and may develope a premium in others, but this will be determined by demand.
Collectors like the mint rolls so they might be more likely to survive and end up
more common in the long run. Some specific rolls will be found to contain some-
thing special and will be destroyed in large numbers.

Generally it's probably wise to avoid paying a big premium for any sort of pack-
aging but there always seem to be exceptions to such rules.

The only reason the rolls that say US Mint on them sell for more is because people believe in the above comment. But the above comment is not true in any way, shape or form.

ALL coins sold in rolls, even those which say US Mint on the wrapper, come from the very same bags of coins. There is NO DIFFERENCE in them at all.

You say that so strongly that I must ask, How do you know? I'm not argtuing or any thing I have seen the coins that come from each and I agree that there is no difference. I am just wondering how you know with such absolute resolution that they are all bagged and shipped before rolling and therefore subjected to the same bag marks.

It's easy to know - the mint will even tell you so if you ask them.

This has been discussed on Coin Talk many times in the past - those who have been members for some time should remember it. Read the article in the following link for additional information - Click Here

Just wanted to clearify. I didn't say the mint rolls were better quality. I said that they sell for more because of the perception that they of better quality. Check on eBay. The proof is there. Mint wrapped rolls bring higher prices than bank wrapped rolls. I would be tough to convince some people that bags of coins that were loaded onto a truck, transported across country, unloaded and then rolled were going to be of the same quality as coins rolled at the mint.

True there is no difference in the quality of the material in the rolls, but in the uture I would expect the Mint wrapped rolls to sell for at least a small premium for at least one reason. With the Mint wrapped rolls you will KNOW for sure what is inside of the rolls. With the bank wrapped rolls you are buying completely blind with no idea what is actually inside the rolls. You could be paying a premium for a highly desired BU roll and getting a roll with a Unc coin on each end and just mixed cirulated dates in between. You have no way of knowing unless you bust open the roll, and once you do that you lose any premium an unopened roll would have, and if it is a mixed rollthere is a good chance it would no longer be returnable because it is no longer what was sold, an unopened bank roll.

mint roll vs: bank roll or dealer's roll

i bought 30 roll from a small dealer. it was terrible, the wrapping were so loose. i think they were using the .99 cent store ready made wrappers. i also tried one roll at another big dealer. this time it was good. but then, i think it's better to buy some at u.s.mint. so i decided to buy 40 rolls again. i think mint roll will be better and will command a better price. and you will have peace of mind. but the mintage of mint roll is quite high. it seems that every collectors already got what they want. so in the future, whom you gonna sell those rolls. use it baby. another thing is that bank rolls were already traded since many years ago. it is generally accepted by everybody. remember, before 1999, there is no such thing as roll bought directly from the mint. and those previous years bank rolls or dealer's roll were traded normally. some went up and some went down. just like the stock market. lastly, since mint roll can be purchase directly. next time around. i will always buy direct from the mint. and a little bit expensive against dealer's roll. but hey, i want mint roll now.

The coins rolls available from the mint are machine wrapped by a 3rd party company. Proof for me has been the expectation of cirular gouges on every end coin of every roll I've ever purchase from the mint.

To answer your question directly, yes, I believe the US Mint wrapper rolls will sell higher only because of the "name brand". Basically, the same reason women will pay $300 for $20 shoes. (NOTE: To all women reading this thread. No offence intended This was not a sexist statement, but a statement of fact. I live in NYC and can EASILY provide evidence supporting my claim :p )

Conder makes an excellent point - you don't know for sure what you are getting when you purchase a bank wrapped roll. You might get a full roll of Uncs - or you might get a partial roll of Uncs.

But that's not the reason people on ebay pay more for the rolls that say US Mint on them. They pay more because they mistakenly think the coins are of higher quality than those found in bank rolls.

People believe what they want to believe. And you can tell them forty eleven times that the US Mint does not roll coins - and they'll still believe they do. And you can tell them that the mint ships every single one of the coins out in a bag that weighs so much it has to be placed on a truck with a forklift - and they'll still believe that the coins in the US Mint roll are of higher quality.

And for that reason - yes indeed they will pay more. I would never dispute that - I'm not blind, I see what happens on ebay.

And ya know what - 10 years from now, they'll still be paying more. Because they believe what they want to believe.

I think you guys need to get to know your local bank personal better. Every couple of weeks my little bank orders coins. They have been able to get rolls of all the new releases after the fed cuts them loose. I believe that they ask for the new coins & order them by the box. I've never had a partial roll of new & old coins, but I suppose it could happen.
But it sure is nice to get them for face value.

    Mint Wraped Rolls

There was an article in COIN WORLD a couple of months ago stating that the company in Memphis that actually fill the Mints orders for rolls, actually recieves their coins in huge bag just like the banks, the only difference is the paper they wrap them in. I was delighted to hear that as I was able to feed the MINT WRAPED PEACE NICKEL frenzy, while buying my peace nickels from a local coin dealer for 2 bucks over cost. JonySky

Count yourself lucky. Many banks REFUSE to order any of the new coins. They are tired of dealing with them.....though why one extra piece of paper is such a hassle is beyond me.

I'm in a big city so there really is no such thing as a "small local bank" all corporate "fast food" style here so not much time or effort is expended to help one customer.

Enjoy what you have in your local bank....I'm envious :)
