I currently own one Re-punched Mint Mark coin showed below . I received this from CONECA when I joined last month . Don't get me wrong , I'm not complaining . I'm just trying to figure this out . In my opinion, these are one of the toughest errors to ID . I still am trying to figure out how someone figured this out . I would of personally would have missed this one and thrown it in the "ole coffee jug "and forgot about it . So, what extra value do they hold ? Comments very Welcome .
Looking at the date I would say that is MD. There are 72 of these listed on VV, so I cold be wrong, but I don't see an RPM.
Well, the best of luck, there are 72 known ones to check against http://varietyvista.com/02b LC RPMs Vol 2/RPMs 1961D (1-39).htm
That’s a tough date to ID. I have a couple rolls worth spread out on my desk for months. Waiting for me to find the time. That said I have 3-4 unattributed RPMs so far. It can be frustrating.
Welcome to CONECA, that seems to be a popular coin, it is the same as the one I received when I joined. Not worth much. Keep for your collections. Semper Fi
"[O]ne of the toughest errors to ID?" Huh? "I would of personally would have missed this one and thrown it in the 'ole coffee jug' and forgot about it?" If you had, you'd have thrown out a 60-year-old high-grade coin. It's not "tough to ID." It's rather so insignificant your pictures aren't even capturing it, you've got to go here and find it just to see what it actually looks like: http://www.varietyvista.com/02b LC RPMs Vol 2/RPMs 1961D (1-39).htm. "[W]hat extra value do they hold?" You've got to be joking. You got it for nothing, didn't you? From the premier error club, bar none? Why are you asking us? Ask them. They gave it to you. We can't even see the thing. Are you intellectually curious about infinitesimal mint errors? Does it turn you on to peer at them and appreciate them through microscopes, which is the only way you have a chance at actually seeing them? Then have at it, and know you're in good company, as there are a lot of others here who do, too. But don't kid yourself. It's about intellectual appreciation, not money. Get the hang of that and you'll fit in just fine. That's not to say there aren't errors as well as varieties for that matter the markets aren't willing to pay dearly for. It's to say, these just aren't it. And that's just how it is, Sal. And I'm not going to do you or for that matter anybody a disservice by trying to trick you into thinking otherwise.
At least with a CherryPicker's you can figure if you really have a match it is worth something beside a few cents. Coppercoins.com is also a great source as they have more than CP, but some of them are of not much value either. I think about 99% of the people looking for varieties and stuff are doing it for value rather than a real collection. IMO, Jim
It's common for folks, especially those new to the hobby, to be curious about the value of things. We even have a forum here at CT for that very purpose. Over time, folks, collectors or not, find that the notion of becoming wealthy through coins is mostly a lofty dream. Very few can make a living at it…fewer will make enough investments that will yield them a retirement. So it is, a hobby…something to invest some time and study into an interest. The main reward is further interest in the hobby, making a few friends, and accumulating some coins that might yield a financial return. That being said, what does it matter if a fellow enthusiast asks a curious question? It shouldn’t. And why make a comment on the significance of something or intellectual curiosity? Keep those comments to yourself. It doesn't need to be said here. I don't want to read it.
He asked whether it had value, Kevin. That was, as you referenced it, his "curious question." You lost sight of it. But I answered it, and I explained why, nonetheless, they're collected, and you say keep it to myself, you don't want to read it. What am I going to tell you? I'm sorry I didn't, and you did read it.
