Hello, I was just wondering what pennies you would slab? I do not have any slabbed coins and was wondering, which ones are worth it? i heard that it would cost about 20.00 to have a coin slabbed and can only think of a few that I would slab. the ones that come to mind are a 1909-s vdb, and the 1969 (DD0). Im sure there are a few more. It would not make very much sense to me to slab a penny that is only worth 15.00! Is there a different price for a penny to get slabbed compared to lets say a quarter? just want your thought on this--thanks--BILL

    (psst ... its cents :D)

i think the decision is up to you. If i had a cent valued at $10, and thought the price might explode for whatever reason .. i still might get it slabbed. Slabbing offers protection for the coin as wlell as everything else.

so its up to you at which price point you decide to slab.

What it cost to slab a coin depends on the value of the coin. The higher the value, the more it cost.

That said, even for a coin valued at say $400, it's going to cost you about $80 to get it slabbed. You pay to ship it there, insured. You pay them to grade and slab it. And you pay to ship it back, insured again. That's how you get to $80 for 1 coin.

Now you can drop that number if you have a bunch of coins to send at the same time and you wait until the TPG is running a special. But getting it under $40 a coin is pretty dang tough.

The far easier, and cheaper, way to do it is to buy the coin already slabbed.

For most coins, your $20 is about right. However, prices also vary according to value and quantity, but not the denomination of the coin. See http://www.ngccoin.com/services/services.asp. And what is not shown there is that 100+ coins, <$300, done in bulk (along with some other regs) can cost about $7 each plus shipping. That means that a lot of you $15 coins can be slabbed. (If it is $15 raw, I will bet you can get $30 slabbed.)

Back to you real question - which to slab? It is much more dependent on he value of the coin than the date. The general rule I have heard is that slabbing should cost no more than 10% to 20% the value of the coin. The higher percent would be because the coin is more commonly counterfeited - i.e. 09-S VDB, 1922-, doubled dies, etc.

You are a little high with your pricing - not that I am disagreeing with you conclusions. At NGC, one $400 coin can be done for ~$60 ($30 for slabbing and $15 shipping each way). You can get 10 X $300 coins done for ~$20 a piece ($16 each for slabbing plus ~$20 shipping each way). It is very possible to avoid the shipping one way if you can catch them at a show and if the coin is post 1955, it is even cheaper.

BTW, no one I know of is going to make a special effort to have a $400 coin graded "early bird ($30) and not as economy @$16 each.

I was thinking about getting my 1946 inveted S slabbed. From what I understand their are less than 10 known, so far. Bob Piazza has already verified its an inverted S.. John Wexler has it now, I believe he's gonna do a little story on 1946 inverted S's... The rest of the cents would have to be key dates with high grades.

For one thing I am a little surprized that you weren't jumped all over for saying PENNIES. Lots of terminology nuts around. I too say PENNIES all the time.
As to which PENNIES to get slabbed, NONE. I am a slab hater. I have no slabs and when I purchase a coin in a slab, I take it out as fast as I can. All my coins go into Albums, 2x2's, plastic rolls but never, never a plastic thing. Why would you want to start a plastic collection anyway? If you just like plastic, buy plastic and be happy with coins as they appear.
Your car is worth more than most coins but you don't have it slabbed do you?
A wife is worth more than most coins but you don't have her slabbed do you?

Let me see, you put your coins in plastic Albums, plastic 2x2's, plastic rolls but never, never a plastic thing. What kind of double speak is that?

OK, you put yourself on the spot. Which coins are worth more than a wife? A wife is worth more than MOST coins???

I would say any coin that doesn't talk back, keep me from buying other coins, or whine about my hobbies would be worth more than a wife.:D

Learned something new - I always wondered why some NGC coins did not have * on them, you have to pay for it. I have been looking for bulk submissions on the site and can not find anything on it. Is it as restrictive as PCGS's bulk submission?

So far as I know, it is only for dealers. I have never done it, but one dealer read most of the restrictions to me.

45 acres outside Punxytawny right across the little mahoning creek from Valier Pa. Look on a map and my land is between Valier and Hamilton. Out of Beford county but still in Pa. I have an old 20 foot camping trailor I use as a hunting camp, plan on being there both weeks of buck season and after christmas for muzzle loader. Had my neck operated on this spring and don,t feel competent with the bow yet so I won,t be bow hunting this year, but definately will be next.

Hmmm...slabbing the wife. I buy my slabs at Victoria's Secret. All kidding aside though, what if you could slab your wife at say, 20 years old? Why wouldn't you slab your most precious coins to keep them in the exact state you love them for? I want my wife to grow old with me. I don't want my most valuable coins doing the same. I want to preserve their value.
