just bought it with little information It was only $9 so i dont have much to lose. its dated 1600 and the bird on the reverse seems to match my austrian coins but i cant find anything so far thanks for any help
Don't collect such older coins, so I cannot tell you much about this piece. But the inscription MONETA NOVA TUGIENSIS refers to the Swiss region of Zug ... Christian
no idea what it is, but i kinda like it! Definately my kinda coin is that. A bit newer than my area though.
The 17th Century Krause lists a Zug KM#17, (thanks for the attribution lead Chrisild) 3 Kreuzer (1 Groschen) minted of billion, with a diameter of 21mm. The coin was minted from 1597-1608. The 1999 2nd edition values for 1601-1608 are the same, except for the higher-valued 1605, so that value is probably fairly accurate for the 1600 version as well. I can't grade your coin from the pictures, but it looks to be at least a VG/fine. I don't have access to a 2003 3rd Ed., but the 2nd says you may have gotten a bargain - $12 VG, $25 F, $40 VF and $60 XF! NOTE - Krause also lists KM#19 without a picture and with the term "Klippe" for the metal, directly under the billion 3 Kreuzer - listed as minted in 1600, 1604 and 1605, but with no values specified! If you can find an expert on Zug coinage it would be worth getting a sight-seen opinion. BTW According to Krause, Zug is a canton in central Switzerland which joined the Confederation in 1352, and minted it's own coins from 1564-1805.
Wow......thanks for the information. I really only collect for historical value, so the $ arent a huge issue.......but I do try to track down the history somewhat around the coinage. A couple of them have been almost impossible to find anything on .........at least on the internet. Thanks again
Man.....i really want to thank you again. I just recieved the coin in the mail and its really gonna be one of my favorites..... The guy included some info on the sleeve it was in and its totally off base compared to your info........ So I typed in the description you gave me and the first site that come up had ..............well this was it...... http://69.55.175.34/bswpg/images7/sw606.jpg its a 1606 one........but its the exact same coin. Ill grant that the guy i got it off said he didnt know much about coins......but whoever researched it for him obviously isnt as adept at identifying as you are...... I really love the historical value of coins.........like looking into the past. thanks again
