I just recieved my silver proof set from the mint and the Samoan .25 has a "ghost" o. I've never seen an error in a proof set ..heard of die cracks but to have just an outline of the "o" in Samoa I am shocked. Is this an isolated incident and should I have this coin graded by NGC..Since it is a Silver Proof and almost, if not definately a DCameo-69(dare I say 70), the error is easily recognized and observed......Any thoughts suggestions..how rare is this occurance. Thanx Shotgunsteve
It isn't conclusive from the photos, but it might be a struck through, maybe grease or something viscous filling the die on those letters...
You have a greased filled die proof coin They are very rare and you could probably get a nice premium for it. Error proof coins are sought after by many collectors because they are proofs and you should'nt have any flaws on them. There are proof coins with die cracks on them and they are called spiked heads and they bring a nice premium on ebay. frankie boy
They are not very rare. They don't command a great premium. Most people view them as proof coins that should be sent back for a replacement. Thanks, Bill
Well now I'm frustrated ..it looks like we have a dissenting views..Well what is the consensus..Should I get this coined graded and sell or not??
Skip the grading. Most likely cost more than the coin is worth. I would keep it for the coolness factor.
Errors like these do not happen often but they do happen. As far as being rare that is in the eye of the beholder and should be treated that way. Some people collect these type of errors and some can care less. The best thing to do is to check Ebay and Heritage to see what this type of error are going for and then decide what you to do with it. As far as my opinion, I would agree with foundinrolls.
