Thought this was interesting, but at the same time was thinking what a shame. http://www.encasecollectorsinternational.org click on newsletter. Still went for $1354. I would looove to have it...
I have an encased cent, though not a 14D, or even a wheat, but to me it's even more valuable as it's one Mr Binion gave to my Grandfather personally. He did a lot of automotive restoration for him many years ago and they stayed in contact. It was given to me about 30 years ago. Guy~
That's a lot of cash for a coin that in all likelihood is damaged on the rims. Maybe if you saw it in person and could tell how the rims looked...maybe... Direct link to the article: HERE
I'll pretty much guarantee that the rims and edge are damaged so the cent isn't worth anywhere close to what an undamaged cent would be worth. Unfortunately someone probably bought this piece thinking to remove the cent and sell it at a nice profit and they will probably destroy a nice collectible encasement to retrieve a damaged 14-D before they learn they won't be able to slab or sell for what they paid for it.
Encased coins are considered " Altered " coins. Some are very expensive too. If anyone is interested ECI also has the new lincoln cents encased, the 1st 2 so far, and they're also doing pocket mirrors with the new cents encased. If you decide to look around, scroll down the page to pinewood collectibles. Lots of collectibles. Pretty neat stuff.
