I found a good description from an old geocities entry. And I think one of dimes is this. I will be dropping off at my friends dad to check. I had 2 - 1942s from that roll and the dates do not look the same to my untrained eye. This site is great to read during conference calls.
I think I can answer my own question GDJMSP. You were refering to the P & D mint of the 1942 dimes only. OK, let me ask another question, what is the mark below the 4 in 1942 ? It seems to be more pronounced than the 1 below the 2 in 1942.
Just the base of an underlying "4" This coin is often referred to as "42" over "41" for that reason. Very cool :thumb:
and the under digit on the 4 is what is usually used to verify the variety since it is more pronounced than the under digit under the 2.
BINGO! I have yet to find one myself but will also admit I've never seen one up this close. I check 1942 dimes when I actually have the time to look at them. The Philly is an easy spot but NOW I have a much better idea where to look on the D mint. Now as LostDutchman said these coins ARE still out there. Can't say I've found an overdate but last year I did find a lousy 1916-D.
Well I'll just be dag nabbed!! Every time I turn the page I learn something useful on this forum. Good stuff amigos and good find Matt!!
Like The Cave Troll said you really look for the mark under the four. This is the easiest thing to see. I have seen these where the mark under the 2 that shows nicely on this piece is basically non existent leaving only the mark under the 4.
Nice find. I can't tell you how many 42s I've poured over looking for that elusive overdate. One of these days I'll find it, or just break down and get it for myself.
This site is just a good read. My friend's dad checked my dime and confirmed it was this type. He said it was a really good one and said he could sell it straight away for me. He sold it to a collector friend for several hundred dollars. Now my wife doesn't mind when I go through those boxes at night when I find something on this site.
Thanks for posting such nice pics of the 1942/41 D! Well, I looked closer at the 1942 D in my album, and compared it with yours. I overlayed your pic of my pic with the mintmark positions and they matched up very nicely. So I checked the front...not much evidence of a 1 ... yours has much more, but there are vague hints of a one. I've heard that on later die stages the one all but disappears. There seems to be doubling on the 4 also. So, what the heck. I just sent it to ANACS. To add to my insanity I also sent in a 1914 S buffalo nickel that has vague hints of being a 1914/3 S. That one is also very difficult to detect. I'll keep you posted on what happens in about a month or so. If one comes through I'll be happy dancin.
