Going to need a little background on the coin. Where did you get it from there are lots of replics out there. Also pictures of the front and back and a weight would be nice if you can. Ice
Response Thanx for the reply, I found it on New Smyrna Beach Fla. I lived down there a few years back. I took it to a jeweler and he told me it was silver, about 20 grams.
Nice beach find....Probally Spanish Empire Cobb, from a shipwreck. 8 Reallies Perhaps. wish i could make out the mint mark (probably Mexico City) and date. Meltdown around $10. But I would keep it !!! Pirate treasure ya know !!! Traci
A couple of comments on this piece. The photos make identification difficult, however the appearance of the coin is suspect. First it has been polished or buffed, "shipwreck" coins are usually corroded in areas and dull due to exposure to saltwater and erosion from contact with sand. This coin, if real, may have been polished for jewelry. Second, cobs were by and large crude devices for shipping the silver back to Spain. The image was imparted into the silver cob by hand held dies and mostly served the purpose of "authenticating" the weight. This was usually done without much concern about appearance. That is what struck me about this coin: it's too perfect. I suggest you look at Daniel Frank Sedwick's website for examples of cobs. Here's a link: http://www.sedwickcoins.com. You can also send him the photo for his opinion. Hope this helps.
Looks like a modern reproduction to me that somebody tossed on the beach. That thing hadn't been there very long before you dound it. The salt eats those things up like a kid with candy.
Thanx all I appreciate all the input... I really didnt think I could find something that is valuable.
