    Hi forum,

Today I come to each and every one of you sitting at home or at work at your computer screens with a very striking and interesting deal that I just made for a coin worth over $1000.

I will not state the name of the coin nor will I state the amount I paid. It really doesn't matter to you, it's just the schematics and workings of this deal that I believe does.

    Okay, here goes.

I saw coin (A) on ebay 3 days ago and bargained with the dealer to get it for a few hundred off its suggested price. I basically bought this coin at grey sheet bid.

Then, I got my seller generated receipt via my gmail account and deposited xxx amount into his company bank account.

FYI, I have this guy's phone number, his business address(which is confirmed by police to be a legitimate operating business) so let me just make that clear real quick.

Okay, the money was sent. The seller and I had fast communication. 1:1- for every message I sent I'd get one back within 15 minutes usually.

Then, after I sent the money. The message back and forth ratio became 6:1, 7:1 etc. Yikes! I thought I just got ripped! Why isn't the guy answering me like he used to? Messages from me like, "Did you receive my payment?" etc were all unanswered until I kept messaging him more he finally wrote back.

Now I can call this dealer up any time and talk to him. At least that's the idea I have because he's not hard to reach(so far)..

But, I just don't know forum. I'm a little worried.
My mom gave a cashier's check for a high amount for a rolex watch once and was scammed. The guy that scammed her didn't have 1700+ positive feedback and an actual business, but still, she went around paypal and lost her money.

I did kinda the same thing. I didn't go through paypal to avoid fees for the seller. Which as an ebay seller, I understand how that can be a concern.

Now I also found out that he is having this item drop shipped to me through another dealer in Florida. I thought he actually owned the item at his store but I guess not. That's something we always have to ask, "Do you own the item currently?"

So, forum, what do you think? I have lots of paperwork on this issue as well. I'm sure the optimists will say wait a week(since seller's e-mail to me does say this process can take 2-16 days) and the pessimists will say call the police or worry.

To boot, I also bought an 11 dollar item THROUGH paypal from this guy just so I have something on record that I bought from him.

I need a realistic opinion folks, nothing too fluffy or doom and gloomy, help a brother out.

    Thanks,

    BNB

I guess I'll take the optimist side and say "Be patient." Granted, you dropped what sounds like a big amount of money, but keep your receipt, just in case. As for his communication, he was talking to you quickly to land the sale, then moved on. that's just business. It may seem shady, and it IS poor customer service, but be patient. If after a week or so, then I'd worry. If another week passes, then report it. He gave you his business addy and phone number, and it checked out, so I doubt he will rip you off.

Unless I thought I was being ripped off, I would it a little time to see if the item arrives before you take any actions that may scare off the seller. Then when you get the item, make sure you're 100% satisfied with it or demand a return/refund.

If you're concerned about the arrival time, insist that the seller provide you with a tracking number and/or maybe request some sort of expedited shipping method if the item hasn't shipped yet. A tracking number should be automatic on a coin of $1000 or more. Remember, if the sender is sending the coin via Registered Mail, it's the safest method, but it can take anywhere from 2 days to 15 days or so for a package to make it from Florida to Southern California.

:kewl: you should have used Pay Pal.then you have a safety net but with the drop shipping I not sure.
    I hope everything is OK

Heh, I hope you read my message word by word in its entirety.

I do normally use paypal for these things.

However, if I went the paypal route with this item, the seller would have had to pay a lot in fees.

Thank you though, I hope all is well too. When the item arrives, I will show pictures.

This is so absurd I do not know what to say. Not your particular deal or your purchase/conflict - that's not what I mean. What I mean is what are we going to have to do next in order to fufill and secure purchase???
Are we going to have to verify the verify with another confirmation that also has to be verified??? Reminds me of third party grading. We need to have it authenticated, encapsulated, verified, and CAC'ed.

When will this need to backup every single nuance in life with yet another bit of security to keep us safe end? I do not know but I am not playing this game - I hope you get your coin.

If I've understood you correctly, I think your first mistake was to violate the terms of the eBay user agreement and circumvent fees by initiating a transaction outside of PayPal/eBay. Shame on you for breaking your word (i.e. the contract).

That said, my level of worry would vary by the amount of time since you sent payment and have yet to receive the coin.

I would also be worried about return privileges, or lack thereof, should the coin not be all there upon receipt.

On the bright side, you might have ripped a nice coin for greysheet, however I have to wonder if the potential reward outweighs the obviously-large risk.

Would you please post a link to the original auction, so we can better judge the coin and seller?

    Respectfully...Mike

I prefer not since I already read the negative feedbacks he had as well as his positives. 1700 total, 20 negatives. All got their products in the end. The only major complaint pattern was the time it took to get the items.

Look, I'm sorry I violated ebays terms, but is it for you to judge?

I worked with the seller on his terms and I did purchase the coin over ebay but used an alternative payment method (direct deposit) oppose to paypal.

It is most definitely for him to judge, mostly because you said "So, forum, what do you think?" :p

Hope all if this worry is for nothing in the end and that you end up with a sweet coin :thumb:

Right but when I say "is it for you to judge" I mean really, that aspect is between ebay and I.

What did he have to say? It's a little early to worry about a deal that's only 3 days old. Hope it all works out.

Yes, it for him to judge as well as any other ebay buyer and seller who plays by the rules. Circumventing fees should result in a ban for both involved. It's not fair to all of the others who sell high dollar items and pay their fees.

If I knew your ebay name, I'd report you myself. Obeying the rules of the marketplace is part of playing fair being considered an honest buyer and seller.

I agree with Mike. You probably just need to show patience and hopefully it works out.

Based on the lack of specific information, none of us can really have a meaningful clue here.

Curiously, what did you hope to gain by not going through Paypal and thus saving the seller Paypal fees (which, by the way, shouldn't/wouldn't have been too high, anyway on a $1000+ item)?

Buying the item at CDN bid might have been a very good deal or a very bad one - it depends on what the coin is, what bid is and on the quality and appeal of that specific coin, which we know absolutely nothing about.

I'm not certain from the posts if you violated Eay rules or not - it sounds like you didn't (as long as you completed the transaction through Ebay), even though you didn't go through Paypal.

    Best of luck.

The risk was yours to take on this deal. You're accountable for the results. I hope it all turns out okay, but knowing that deals like this take place over ebay makes me want to bid there even less (I haven't ebayed for months now). Also, you took a risk that I would never take given the amount involved. But that's just personal preference.

Instead of acting like such a you know what, why don't you instead offer help to a fellow forum member instead of try to rat him out?

Just fyi, I really think 90% of you are missing the point here, it's not like I did a secret transaction. Let's make that clear.

I did a normal buy it now from the dealer BUT, there was no option through paypal so I checked out under "other ways of payment" and that's where I was able to do this.

Can we please be clear on this before I have some of you trying to act all righteous and want to report me? Because that's a big no no when you don't have the information set straight.

    Thanks

BNB - I hope you have friends at the local hospital burn unit. One of these days you are going to need them.

    Hey Doug,

I am really good at networking(well, usually lol) so do you think I should start meeting people and ask if they work at a "local hospital burn unit"?

When they ask me why I ask, what should I tell them :-/

You should tell them that because of your refusal to listen to good solid advice from seasoned collectors, and because of your continual trying to find a "deal" - that you are going to get burned, very badly, 80% 3rd degree burns over your entire body would be my guess. And it probably won't be too far in the future.

So you are going to be looking to them to make donations to help with your injuries.
