I have seen some ads recently in the Sunday ads about this littleton coin company, and want to know has anyone done buisness with them. I have thought about trying it but I am kinda skeptical. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Stay skeptical and stay away from that company. They don't have anything going for them but high prices and bad news for ppl. They resell U.S. Mint coins at marked up prices and besides that they have other hussles, so you gotta becareful. Like becareful and stay away from them. :D

Some of their stuff is good. You just have to be patient. I've bought a few things from Littleton in the secondary market and have always been satisfied. They've been around for as long as the best of them, so they must do something right on occasion.

They do have some really nice stuff. But the prices are crazy high. I like their albums and folders though, which are the only things I ever have or ever will buy from them.

I've tried out their coins for review mail order program back in the 80s. Littleton sends you random coins or notes to review in hand and buy or return to them. Everything is very over priced in the mail program, as well as on their web site, but you are paying for the convenience of just picking what you want without having to spend time searching for coins as shows, shops and auctions nor needing to worry about authenticity of coins from eBay sellers for instance. Littleton is safe and convenient but you pay dearly for that and you will not be able to flip or resell your coins due to the Littleton mark up. If you are really willing to overpay for the service instead of doing the work yourself (which is half the fun of collecting) to find or buy coins at the best price for grade for your collection then there's nothing wrong with buying from them. Just shop around and you'll see how big of a mark up they put on stuff, especially Mint items as noted above and coin supplies.

not true at all except for some steep prices. many people here have bought as well as sold to littleton. they are not for everyone but you will get the coins that you pay for.

most years you can get great deals on silver eagles as a promotion too.

Reading this post gave me flashbacks to the full page adds that I read Coin World as a kid. Before the internet and with no shops or shows that I could get to this was the way to build the basic sets...

Haven't dealt with them for 35 years...

Compare prices with other coin dealers and you'll answer your own question. Fancy catalogs and a large workcrew. Thats a lot of paychecks every week, someone has to pay them. Not Me...

To start with WELCOME TO THE FORUM.
Actually this is the type of question you could just hit the search thing at the top and say Littleton. That company has been slammed more than bragged about. I've seen posts on this and other forums for years about them and usually not to good. I've only met one person that uses their Albums and told me they tend to fall apart. Not easy to find replacement pages and no a real decent variety. Of course that is basically hear say. I go to many coin shows and when mentioning that company, also not many good things are mentioned.
The most complaints I hear is the prices are as bad as the Red Book. They are also noted that once they get you on thier mailing list, they start sending you stuff even if you don't ask for anything.
Best to just not get involved.

That is just the things that I was looking for. I knew that if I brought it up that there would be a lot of great information that you collectors would give to me. Being new at collecting I really need to say thank you to all that posted.

They sell value added products to the public at steep markups but the prices aren't that bad when you consider the enormous advertising and labor costs. For beginning collectors this might be one of the best ways to acquire some coins. Intermediate and advanced collectors will normally have no reason to buy from them but there are always exceptions.

They do pay very high prices for what they need. They are legendary for being picky so some people don't like selling to them. Their checks are good but a little slow.

The biggest caution is that they send out approvals. These are coins for which you will be charged if they aren't returned. This can spell disaster for some people if they don't understand this or can't return the coins.

I agree, just make sure it is solid for the grade.

Littleton fills a niche but not for serious collectors except

Littleton fills a niche but not for most serious collectors except maybe to sell coins to - they pay more than anyone but thier sandards are very strict. Littleton's graders are tough when they are buying, very tough - they will mot buy sliders in between any grades.
They are priced high, probably 30 to 40% higher than retail.
I wish I had bought and held onto a couple hundred key date Lincoln's and Indian's about 25 years ago from them. You can be sure if they say a 14-D was VF it was, all day long.
Some people like to get coins on approval for that matter coins in the mail. It's exciting for some and you really could build a nice colletion from them over time. Only problem is you would have to wait a long time to even get even.
I will not trash them as a seller or buyer because I have some serious dealers who have sold them stuff. Many have since said it's almost impossible to get them to accept everything they send though. They are just too high on thier prices for most of us. But as far as coin dealers go their level of deceit among coin dealers that are bad is not really bad at all.

Most of the Littleton stuff Ive seen has been a coin the original buyer paid Littleton about $80 for and is now trying to sell at realistic street price. Like about $40

Would totally agree, Prices are way to high at Littleton!! If your a collector
And want to keep it for several years or pass it down to your grand kids
    Maybe you will break even!

I heard that they cherrypick coins sent to them -- they buy the best and return the rest.

I would call that statement accurate! Through my own experience with them!

Isn't that what anyone else does? Cherrypick the best and pass on the rest. Whitman even publishes Cheerypickers guides for collectors. It's part of the hobby and act of collecting. Who goes out looking for junk to keep for their collection, no one. A choosy business like Littleton isn't going to waste their time trying to resell junk or items of debatable grade either. Littleton provides the service to buyers who can't or won't do the leg work themselves, for a mark-up. Anyone thinking to buy from them really needs to understand the high prices, the service, why to buy from or avoid this seller.
