I ran into an old friend yesterday, who happens to be a small time coin dealer, and a big time treasure seeker. I had ask him about a 1857 flying eagle cent with the obverse of 1856. He said he had none, but he has 7 1856 flying eagle cents. I ask if they were fake. He said years ago he had been metal detecting( somewhwere in Maryland ), and dug up a very small coin purse. Inside were 7 1856 FE cents, and 3 1859 indian cents. He says the coins are just barely corroded and in VF-EF condition. He showed one of the cents to someone, and was offered $4000 years ago. Personally, this story sounds a little far fetched, but not impossible. Any thoughts...
.... printed on the back of the pouch was a map showing the location of the rest of the hoard. Often, fact is stranger than fiction.
Well today a VF is about $8,000 in VF per CDN Bid price. So, years ago, it was possible. Any chance he would let you photograph them to post here?
I run into him 3 or 4 times a year, but that is a good question, would he. All I can do is ask, if I see him anytime soon...
