1988--what caused this?

    Yes it is small, but if it isn't post mint, it looks kinda like struck through a little bit of grease.

    From what I can see it looks like the die is worn, die deterioration damage.

    Try a toothpick on the area. Sometimes you find it is just clear grease?

    Really hard to say. Most of the suggestions so far seem right on target for determining what it could be...

    If you're talking about the raised metal "line" that connects the bottoms of the letters "ONE CENT", then it looks like a die break.
