Hello CT! :] I've been reading thread after thread for hours each day trying to gather any knowledge i can. I am 17 and have been in and out of coin collecting since i was young. Lately, let's just say I've become obsessed. I have the urge to go on eBay coin sprees but know that that's the worst way to go about my obsession. Instead I want to look into buying the books first. I would like to know of any books anyone can suggest; I have the RedBook in which I've been using to attack the coins I have. I'm not interested in gold or dollar pieces. Anything will be useful, relating to books to read or just a simple tip you might have. I'll check back tomorrow. Thanks in advance.
The books I read when I was starting are incredibly useful: Coin Collecting for Dummies (has a lot of the basics) along with The Coin Collectors Survival Manual (by Scott Travers). I would also recommend you study in depth the ANA Grading Standards Guide. If you study these three books, it will lay a good foundation for future studies.

Made me laugh. SINCE YOU WERE YOUNG? Just what do you think you still are? My suggestion is to try to find a coin show or coin club in your area. Try Google for those and go to as many as possible. For one thing at many coin shows there are dealers with many, many books on coins for sale. Also, you can talk to some really great experts for free. My favorite book for Lincoln Cents is one called Looking Though Lincoln Cents by the guy that has the web site www.coppercoins.com Not to expensive and loaded with info. Another thing is to just go to Google and type in Coin Books. You would be amazed at how many there are lately. Coin books are becoming similar to those ones on how to become rich buying real estate. :whistle:
Carl: Nice catch, I missed that comment on my first reading (gotta stop skimming). Read everything, and anything that you can get your hands on. Breen's encyclopedia is fun, just don't take it as gospel. And ask questions. Oh, and welcome to the forum. Frank
One more thing is to try going to the Whitman Web site. They are the ones that make the Red Book and they make many, many more. Whitman Publishing also makes a real lot of coin collecting stuff.
