golden toned quarter on the right... how? and why?

    so... I got this coin (the 1948 S quarter on the right) earlier and I was wondering anyone knows what the heck happened to it?

    That doesn't really look like toning. I think what you are seeing is the normal effect that circulation has on a silver coin.
