OK, let's see how good you guys are. Can anyone help with this coin. Mintage, value..etc.? :headbang:
I believe it is a year 14(1939), 1 sen(Y#56). Minted in aluminium under the ruler Hirohito(Showa). Total mintage of 444,602,146, but there are two different types. I can't tell which your is, your coin is awfully beat up and your obverse(second pic) is upside down. The obverse depicts a bird around cherry blossoms. In its condition value would be less than 25¢(Krause lists VF at the same price).
arigoto also works, it's just not as polite as the way you used it. Believe me I know. I work for a Japanese company.
I think it's Type A. For some reason Krause only specifies the two types, without explaining the difference, which is in the calligraphy of the character "shi" (4). In your bottom picture that is the character to the right of the one that looks like a +. Type B has the usual calligraphy for that character, which consists of two rounded arcs in the upper corners. In Type A there is a diagonal line from just above the lower left corner, to the top line, and two lines make an almost square box at the upper right corner. That part of your coin isn't in the world's greatest shape, but it looks to me like a Type A. With the coin in hand, you should be able to determine the type with greater precision. Although Type A in decent condition is much more valuable than Type B according to both Krause and the JNDA catalog, aluminum coins are famous for condition problems, and yours is worth <50¢ as an A, and <10¢ if it's a B.
どもありがと ? Don't touch my mustache. Close enough? Ok, so I'm really here to subscribe to this thread so I can check out some of my old coins and figure out how you get Linux to do *kana.
Although your Hiragana is correct, the Romanization should actually be "doitashima s h i t a" (without spaces). For those who don't realize it "Don't touch my moustache" is ignorant GI slang for the term, which roughly translates as "You're welcome", or "Don't mention it", in response to an expression of gratitude. (That stupid '50s TV filter needs to realize that letter groups within a word don't necessarily have the same meaning they would as a separate word.)
Dom0~from this ignorant old GI. You're Free to express such learnings. Now if you can help me with an ancient puzzle box that rattles so I can find out what is inside. Anybody know how to open one of those wooden boxes from the Orient? I can't just bring myself to take a saw to it to find out what is rattling around in it. They sound like coins. :hammer:
Yes, but if I told you I would have to kill you to guard the secret. Just send it to me and I'll get it open for a commission of one-half the contents. (Pretend there's a tongue-in-cheek emoticon here.)
Yes, I have one from many years ago. This one has a sliding bar in the middle of a side panel that you push out first, then push that side panel down. On one of the sides there is also a secret compartment. I recently opened it and found a stash of coins from a long time ago.
Can it be as hard as staying logged on here?:hail: This Box has 12 slides and a nice jingle inside. They sound old.:desk:
Here is the difference between the two Showa 14 1 sen coin: The difference lies in the character four. Number four is this by the way: The best way to describe the character four would be a couple of strokes in a box. In the regular version, it would look like this: _| |_ The scarce version has one slanted stroke and looks like this: / |_ I did take a while to look for the scarce version. I have a massive Japanese coin collection to show next
