If I were to put together a nice ms66+ (slabbed) set what coins would be the most costly. Any comments or thoughts on such a set welcome.
The whole sets are sold on Teletrade routinely, and trade in the $200-$300 range, with PCGS being slightly more expensive than NGC.
This is a difficult question to answer without some additional information. The first question is what slab? Prices are very different between NGC and PCGS for Jefferson Nickels because PCGS is more conservative. The second question is are you talking about FS or non full steps. That designation would make a huge price difference. Lastly, are you going to include the varieties such as the 1943-P DDO (Doubled Eye) and the 1943/2-P overdate. Including the varieties will make the price sky rocket and they will be the most expensive coins. Since you didn't provide information about what is included I will assume you are talking about the 11 core issues in non full step graded by NGC. The answer would be all of the coins are in the same price range. Here are the Numismedia FM values in MS66 & MS67 and you will find these prices to be pretty close to auction prices realized. 1942-P----------$30----------$70 1942-S----------$39----------$80 1943-P----------$30----------$60 1943-D----------$30----------$53 1943-S----------$30----------$65 1944-P----------$38----------$117 1944-D----------$28----------$68 1944-S----------$33----------$71 1945-P----------$32----------$221 1945-D----------$27----------$63 1945-S----------$30----------$80 Total------------$347---------$948 The 1943-D may have the lowest mintage, but it is by far the easiest to locate even in full steps and is the cheapest coin in the set. The 1944-P is tough to find in MS67 with good eye appeal, but the key in MS67 has to be the 1945-P. With a total population of 360/2 and all the war nickel collectors, well, you do the math. Keep in mind, I have two of them. If your goal is to complete an NGC registry set, you can assemble a decent set without the overdate for less than $1,000 and be in the top 40. If you want to break into the top 20 you will need the overdate which will run you over $500 in MS64. The number 1 spot is unattainable, but to compete for a top 10 spot, it will get expensive. My registry set is currently ranked 3rd and cost well over $10,000. I highly encourage you to build one of these sets. It is affordable, fun, and Cointalk members already have 6 of the top 50 sets in the NGC registry.
I assume you are not talking about the varieties such as the 1943/2-P. A month or so ago I completed a MS-67 War Nickel set. The most expensive one was the hardest to find (no surprise) and the last one I got. It was the 1945-P. A lot of the coins you want are easy enough to get on eBay. But you may have to go to Teletrade for the tough dates. That's where I got my 45-P. Read and understand the charges for the buyer's fee and S&H, and adjust your bids accordingly.
Hello Kanga ,,,an yes,,,,the 1945-P was the hardest to find,,,I was just lucky to find a gentleman who happened to have it,,,,I was able to get it for $160 with s/h ... I also finally completed the MS-67 War Set. the registry I have thru Ngc requires to have the 1943/2 Variety also to make it a complete set,,,I was only lucky enough to get it in a ( AU- Grade thou~... I'm currently ranked 12th in the Jefferson 1938 to date catagory. I think, I need a rest ,,,,,it's been an ' exhausting 2 years making this Jefferson Collection ...
I purchased an NGC 66 non FS war nickel set recently off the bay and paid $214 (give or take a few bucks). I do not know but I would think buying the entire set at one time would be cheaper.
good morning, bamaguy ? this is chasindreams,,,,your going to find this hard to believe, but it was a little over a month ago , (in August/2009) a seller on ebay put his complete Jeffeson War Set up for Sale, for just under $600.00 ! Yes, thats right! it was around $587.00 or so,,,,,,I had to look Twice! come to find out, he already had a complete set, an' wanted someone to get a great deal. I didn't have the cash at that time, or I would've gotten it,,,,I think, I should have,,,,this just doesn't come around very often. every once in a blue moon ,something like this comes around. good luck, on your Jefferson War-Set.
Search Teletrade auctions for a set a slabbed war nickels. I see complete sets of war nickels (non-FS) graded MS66 by NGC going for $300-$350.
