If you had to pick just one coin that would be most significant for history, beauty, and what describes this country what would it be and why?

Tough call. Leave out the beauty part and you have 2 or 3 that woul dbe tough to beat on the other criteria. Lincoln cent, Washington quarter, and the Walking Liberty Half. Kinda tough to think of any other man who played a greater part in our history and what this country stands for than those two. I picked the Walker because of the Lady Liberty figure and the eagle.

But if forced to pin it down to just one, as much as I hate to admit it, then I'd have to pick the Washington quarter I guess. Father of our country and all that, coin has LIBERTY and the mottos on it so that's covered. Yeah, I guess that would be the one.

Too bad about the beauty aspect though.

    Flying Eagle

For me, I'd have to pick the Flying Eagle Penny, The eagle exemplifies what this country is all about. Strength, Honor, Courage. and beauty.

For the same reasons stated above I'm choosing the St. Gaudens Double Eagle which as a gold coin also symbolizes wealth :)

For me, it's Draped Bust Silver Heraldic Eagle.

The obverse sports the best image of our most important concept - Liberty. That rendering is magnificent. How marvelous.

The reverse truly speaks about the essence of America.

The vigor and splendor of a bald eagle - who can forget seeing one in the wild ?

A shield, for defense which rarely bends and never breaks.

An olive branch, symbolizing a deep-running, self-sacrificing friendship for those that will have it. We proved our dedication to our friends in WW 1 and WW 2 and to the present day. We have paid dearly for our dedication to others - and it is well worth it.

And finally, arrows when necessary. Make no mistake about those.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

How about seeing one in my backyard? That was an unforgettable experience.

I would choose the Walking Liberty Half. Beautiful, artistic, symbolic.

    I imagine so !

All my sightings were on whitewater runs. My first sighting was on the Klamath River in Oregon / California. On the Salt River (Arizona), I saw a trio fly over our camp right about dusk. As you said - unforgettable.

I'm partial to the eagle landing on the moon with the earth and North America in the background...like my avatar.

Buffalo nickel. It's always been the perfect representation of America for me. The Indian for heritage and perseverance. The buffalo for strength and bounty. Those two symbols are solely American and recognized as such no matter what corner of the world you're in.

Got to agree with guy on this one , everything guy said & the fact the American Indian ( Native American ) & the Buffalo were the first ones to call this country home ;)

It's a tough call between the Walking Liberty and Buffalo nickle the Buffalo because the Native American and buffalo are recognized anywhere in the world as America but my nod goes to the Walker , for beauty and Miss Liberty holding her hand out to the world with the flag and olive branch in hand , and the strong Eagle protecting us from all danger .

The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle has my vote!

    The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle:

√ Issued at a relative pinnacle of success and reflecting many aspects of early US history, thus it represents a lot: a couple hundred years of struggle, state building, re-uniting a divided nation, constantly refining a freer nation, defining it's lands, it's people, it's ideals, technology and mastery of the land, an open place of hope for the world to see and come to...

Innovative and aesthetically appealing design: liberty advancing, eagle in flight, radiant capitol of the republic, rays of the sun booming on both sides of the coin,

Liberty astride (not seated or in profile) and with flowing hair and robes,

    Mottos and Edge Letters,

√ Size, big, a large diameter gold piece

    Gold

Widely agreed to be one of the most beautiful US coin designs and highly respected, collected and referred to amongst collectors.

It is continually paid hommage to in the continued release of AGE bullion and proof releases as well as the new 2009 UHR design.

An all around winner that all collectors should aspire to own at least one example of this coin!

For me it has to be the 1793 Flowing Hair Cent

Seems to relate to beginning of this country and is a unique artistic design.

I hate to jump on the band wagon, but my vote is for the Walking Liberty Half. I like the idea that they used the design again (only larger) on ASE's, so when I get old I'll still be able to enjoy them with without a magnifying glass!!!
