Thought I'd try to get everyone's opinion as to the grade and possible value of this cent. I've had this since I was a kid long long before I began actively collecting. Funny, I have no idea where it came from, though probably my great uncle (the type to hand out half dollars). Never really paid it any attention but in re examining recently I realized just how good of condition it's in. Tried taking the best photos I could with my digital camera, but as I've seen many type before, it looks much better in hand. So would appreciate feedback. Thanks.

Seems to have AU55-58 details, nice strike to it for sure. Can't really tell for sure but the reverse appears to maybe have some type of environmental damage to it??? Almost like someone applied a lacquer to it and it's peeling off. Cool coin though.

I would agree AU 58. Most have gone at auction in this grade slabbed (NGC, PCGS, ANACS) for $18.00

Thanks for the feedback. What is it about this coin that makes it AU? My guess was that it was close to the AU/MS split but I wasn't sure. It looks better in hand than in the pictures (lighter coloring, not speckled, good reflectivity, no scratches on obverse) but I do see some wear on the right side of the reverse and some small nics on the design. Would this be the reason?

    Thanks.

oh, and there isn't anything peeling off the reverse. My guess is some sort of oxidation.
