Now I am guessing, that the majority of collectors on the forum are Americans. So the question would mean, what was your first coin not from the USA? For our members from other countries, that would mean which coin was your first that is not from your home country. For me, I can't actually be sure what the first one was. It was probably a Canadian cent, as I have gotten a lot of them in change through the years. But this is the first I remember! My dad brought this home from work one day. One of his job was as a bus mechanic but sometimes when none needed work he would sweep them out too. He found this coin wedged under a seat, I believe he told me. I can't get any more precise then that, as I lost my dad to cancer in 2002. He would have brought this home in the early 1990s. I would guess 1991 or 1992. He brought it home and gave it to me. Sorry for the poor quality scan. It's a half Franc from 1987.
I no longer have it but I do recall it was a Indian head cent given me by my father I was about 6 or 7 at the time LOL
i come from india... the first non-indian coin i earned on my own happens to be a bicentennial ike dollar... it came to me by chance when a guy asked for quarters to use the laundry services in exchange for this big coin.... this took place summer 2004 near dallas... .. happened to be my lucky day first time i saw something this big existed in circulation...
Oh, when I was about 6 or 7, I got a hundred or so world coins that had been deposited in a charity box where my mother worked. That's what started me off. I'll just say a 1943 Irish Penny is one I remember vividly.
My grandparents went on a trip to Europe in 1955 and gave me some coins they had brought back. I was seven at the time.
I must have been about the same age went friends of my parents gave me pocket change bak from Spain, Italy and Yugoslavia Q
Anything Canadian pulled from my paper route in the early 60's. I am unsure of the exact "First Coin". The Cents were handed to my daughter 12 years ago when she showed an interest in collecting. She was able to get over 60% of the coins she needed for a Small Cents set 1920 to date. I used the nickel and silver coins as a foundation for my Canadian KM circulation set.
For me, a 1941 Lincoln cent I found in change got me into the hobby, and Canadian cents got me interested in collecting Canadian coinage, and also were my first foreign coins. I soon sought Irish and Italian coins to honor part of my heritage, but I had to go to a dealer for those.....
My first foreign coins were many, many years ago. Dad was a department head at a university and hired a professor from India. I'll never forget those odd coins with the scalloped edges. Might still have 'em around here somewhere...
When I was a kid, my aunt spent several years as the personal stewardess to some Indian Guru Maharaja or something. This guy went all over the world doing charity work and proselytizing, and my aunt went with him. Whenever she came back, she would bring me a few coins from her travels - I got a few coins from circulation from about 40 different countries this way. This was one of the many impetuses which drove me to collecting.
I can't say for sure, I've been into coins since I was 3... Could have been a Norwegian 10 krone coin from 1980's, which my dad brought to me from his trip to Norway, or then some Swedish coins from my relatives living in Sweden. Or perhaps a handfull of Soviet coins brought to me from the USSR by my grandmother. Must have been one of those three, they are my oldest coin memories :kewl:
I don't remember my first...I assume it was a common Canadian cent in change. However, when I was in the 2nd grade I found a 1991 10 cent piece from the Netherlands on the ground at my school. It was one of the first times a coin peaked my interest...and I still have it.
Oh man, good question! Some older Portuguese coins from the 1920's I got from my Grandma. They were pretty cool. Since I used to get coins as a kid from relatives, also I'd say some random British coinage from the Caribbean and coins from all those banana republics that primarily exist as an importer of fruit for our markets and bases for our naval ships.
Thanks Sasha, sometimes I have one Thanks for all the replys everyone! It's interesting to see how many different places and how many different ways you each got your first world coin. Keep those posts coming
