I'm seeing a 1925 Stone Mountain U.S. Commemorative half for $35.00, plus $3 shipping, looks to be circulated, but not worn to death. Should I buy it or hold out for a better price?
Sasha, don't waste your money. This is a lesson that unfortunately I don't always live by, but try to buy the best possible coin for the least amount of money. Stone Mts in high grades are readily available and deals can be found. Don't buy something that a few years down the road, you will wish that you had a nicer one. That time around may cost you double of what you would have spent if you just got a nice one years earlier. Also, lets say you do find a really nice one now, but find a nicer one years later.....a nice coin is always easier to unload than a not so nice one. For the price that is being offered, if seems as though the Stone Mt. is a circulated example. Save your money. You can find a nice UNC one down the road.
I think an XF coin is worth around $40-$50 or so, but certified MS62-63 examples can be found for $60-$70 fairly easily. If you think you're ever going to upgrade the coin, I would pass on the circulated example and save a few more bucks for a nice looking MS63. I was always told to buy the best grade you can afford, especially when it's not that much more of a jump in price. However, if you really like the look of the circulated example that you're looking at, $35 probably isn't too bad, but I would try to check completed eBay auctions first if you have any doubts as to it's value.
Thanks everyone! I'm going to hold off on it for now, seems a bit high for a dull boring example. Plus, with Coinfest this coming weekend 'm sure I can find a better example within close price range.
I fully agree. There are quite a few coins I bought when I was younger that I now feel I need to upgrade and it almost feels like I need to start over.
