I prefer NGC and I'm not a real big certified coin guy. But both are top in the field.

Personally I think they're pretty much equal I think PCGS does a better job marketing their services and interacting with collectors and dealers giving the perception they're the best or the #1 TPG.

Buy the coin and not the holder :)

If you want to know which plastic the market prefers, just search auction results for a given coin of the same grade in each holder and you'll generally have your answer.

While I agree that you should buy the coin...there is nothing wrong with buying slabbed coins. I understand what is meant by this statement...but frankly it has nothing to do with the OP's question. The OP wanted to know which service was better.

Since you removed the "value" factor, I prefer NGC.
    Why?
Because I'm an ANA member so I don't have to pay to join.
Otherwise I perceive them as equals.

It is beyond my grading ability to choose between PCGS and NGC. The important thing for most collectors is to stick with the top two. However, I have also purchased some coins in PCI slabs because they looked good for the grade [and price], and I think very highly of the grading in the old ANACS slabs.

I think this is why "Buy the coin not the slab" was mentioned. You can get properly graded coins in ANAC's holders. I also believe depending on the series on who (PCGS or NGC) is more accurate, more often. I think with large cents PCGS is more accurate more often - but I would not blindly buy a pcgs coin. Therefor it never hurts to say buy the coin and not the slab. :)

Examine the coin carefully then buy regardless of the slab. I've stated before that I will no longer do business with PCGS. They are a much self-hyped organization. My experience is that coins sent to them for grading were not returned in original mint condition. They were subjected to in house cleaning using harsh methods. I do not recommend them.
